Counselors Check Grades, Schedules The counselors monitor stu- dents' grades, and adjust their class schedules. They also reg- ister ninth graders in the spring and help seniors with scholar- ship applications. Along with everything else, they help ju- niors and seniors with the Work release program. New this year on the counsel- ing staff are Mrs. Elvia Gray- bell and Mr. Laron Olsen. Mr. Olsen is not new to K.H.S. since he has previously served as a classroom teacher and night school counselor. Mrs. Graybell comes to Kearns from Cyprus High School. Again this year, Mr. Les Catmull is the head of the Counseling Department. We appreciate all the unself- ish help which the counselors give to each individual student. ns Elaine plunges into another exciting project. Dedicated Faculty Pursues Excellence 78 Faculty The Kearns faculty, consist- ing of 76 members, worked hard to help their students achieve both academic and ex- tra-curricular success. Eight teachers from last year did not return, but ten new teachers joined the staff. There were also several new course offerings to brighten up the scene: Gifted and Talented, A.P. Spanish, English as a Sec- ond Language, Advertising, and Graphics. Actually, Graph- ics had been taught in the past, but was restored to the curricu- lum this year to add strength to our vocational program. Sign language and lipreading were also taught to the hard of hear- ing. The biggest change this year was the new block scheduling which consisted of eight class periods with odd and even numbered classes meeting on alternate days. The block sys- tem enabled students to take an additional class. Many favor- able comments were expressed about the block system, al- though the academic classes had some difficulty with day- to-day continuity and maintain- ing the students' attention span. We express our appreciation for the dedication and diligence of our Kearns faculty. , x l we 'Y' .
