ACADEMI ACHIE EME T After Christmas, The Na- tional Merit Corporation made public the names of approximately I3,000 U.S. High School seniors who successfully completed appli- cations and all other criteria for recognition as finalists. Such a recognition means that those stu- dents represent the top one per- cent of all U.S. High School Sen- iors, as measured by their scores on the PSATXNMSQT exam. To many schools, this achievement is considered to be one of the most coveted awards, because of its implications toward the quality of instruction within a school district and because of the opportunities it affords the stu- dent. This year Kearney High School was honored to have four students commended and two fi- nalists. Those commended were: Steve VanVelzer, Jeff Jones, Me- linda Lein, and Steve Trost. The two finalists chosen were Dan Hampton and Brent Hal- bleib. Left to right: Dan Hampton, Steve VanVelzer, Melinda Lein, Brent Halbleib, Jeff Jones. not pictured Steve Trost. What exactly is a Best Friend ??A best friend is more than a title, it's usually known and understood without ever having to be said. A best friend accepts you the way you are. A Best Friend can be any size or sha e an kind of person Fla ws and imperfections don 't seem P f Y - ,to matter. Best Friends complement each other, always bringing out the best. A best friend seems capable of making our imperfections disappear. Best Friends always seem to know what is needed to make a day without ever having to be told. They provide a shoulder for our burdens and troubles. They know the right word or that certain look that will make one smile. Best friends are comfortable with each other. They see us at our worst as well as our best, there is no need for pretence. Best Friends are safe. They know your secrets, your dreams. and your goals. They would never stand in your wa y or place you in danger. Best Friends are . . . FOREVER.
