They didn't have it. Power. They didn't have it. Great defense. They didn't have it. The season looked like one big question mark in March for the baseball dogs. This squad was only returning I regular starter. The Kearney kids did have one thing going for them. Most of the members of the team had played together for years. This unit relied on how much they knew each other as players. That knowledge led the Bulldogs to their second district championship. L The last seeded Dogs stole the district championship with consistent pitching and explosive hitting. Jeff Delsemme 8 Mike Gras- sley only gave up two earned runs between them. Todd Shear 8 Brian Jamison both batted .538, while Shear also had I2 RBls. Shear also came away with District MVP. Kearney totaled up a 9-9 record during the regular season. The team batted a respectable .29I average. Senior Eric Harris, :the team's defensive leader in centerfield, led the team with a sterling .387 average. Jamison, a three year letterman, just lost the batting title with a .383 average, but he led the team in seven other categories including runs CISJ, RBIs C22, a school recordj, doubles CSI and home runs 435. Second baseman, Brent Halbleib, who struggled early in the year, had a .29I average and I9 RBIs. Leftfielder Doug Gibson, batted .227 during the regular season, really turned it on come district time. Utility man, Dean Gingerich, hit for a .2I4 average. Tony Olson, who filled the catcher's spot well, hit .3I3. Shear came up half way through the season to take over at third and hit .370. Greg Logerwell 8 Mike Grassley shared the shortstop spot when they weren't pitching. Grassley hit .245 and Logerwell hit .245. On the mound, Grassley was 2-5 with a 3.99 ERA and 47 strikeouts. Logerwell had a 4.88 ERA and a 2-2 record. When those two weren't pitching, Delsemme was either getting the start or coming in for relief. Delsemme went 5-2 with a fine 2.l4 ERA. Senior Eric Harris said, It was a tough season, but I was happy to see the team pull together at the end.
