, F... ' 'W ..,.- Y-A N , L - c YOUR FAC I Changing offenses to meet Coach Kathy Down- ey 's standards was a difhcult transition for the Varsity Girls' Volleyball team. Even though it was the Hrst year that all of these players ha ve participated on the same team, they really worked hard and had a good attitude toward everything. By working hard, these girls made it through 60 hours of two practices a day before the regular season began. Bryan Taylor said, lt was a great pleasure seeing and supporting our volleyball team. Their team effort and sportsmanship was above the 'norm '. I also enjoyed traveling to other schools to see them. Although they had their share of losses, they created a live slam-the-ball-in-their face atmosphere. I loved it! All of the girls enjoyed this season immensely. They really strived for a .500 season, but just by having fun and executing the new offense by the end of the season was a great thrill. Two Kearney players simutaneously go up for the block against St. Joe-Lafayette and succeed. , ,, 'ff 931111 K M ,,f ,f ,f X X M27 ' P , 7 V , I f 1 , f f ,Wf Af , , ,H H A X 1 ,..-, , f 2 ,' ' It 73 ' 2 fl , . . When practices started, there was one session in the morning and a session in the afternoon. In the morning it was cool and in the afternoon it was hot and humid. Both ses- sions were extremely tough for those not in shape. They often ran IO miles a day. There were many ups and downs during the season with weather and injuries often becom- ing a factor. The boys had a good season, usually finishing strong as a team. At a very cold and windy District meet the boys came in 3rd. They ended the season being ranked the 3rd 3A All- Metro team. This year there were 2 boys, Robbie Jensen and Greg Marshall, and 2 girls, Janel Teiken and Michelle Coleman, who qualified for State. All the runners did well considering they were run- ning in cold and rain and against I5O of the best runners in the state. Robbie Jensen ran strong finishing 24th and Greg Marshall finished 67th. Michelle Coleman, despite a hard fall, finished 40th, and Janel Teiken with a close finish re- ceived l5th being the first person from Kearney y y 54 CrossyyCountry y CROSS COUNTRY STATS Boys Girls 4 Marshall 6 2 Ray-Pec I' I Pleasant Hill 2 3 Lafayette 5 IO Excelsior Springs 5 Kearney Invitational 'I I Kearney 3 Harrisonville 4 3 District 7 Janel Teiken - l5th at State Robbie Jensen - 24th at State Michelle Coleman - 4Oth at State Greg Marshall - 67th at State I Full team did not compete ever to be named All-State.
