,, ,.,, .,..,......--. .,......-.,....--. .. A ' ' Royalty... and Bulldog Determination I always thought Matwarming was exciting and everything, but this year was different because it was me. It was shocking to even be a candidate, but being elected queen was something l'll never for- get, said Matwarming queen Kel- Iey Bedell. Kelley, a Varsity wres- tling cheerleader, reigned with se- nior Jim Nicholas, a Varsity wres- tler, over the I986-87 Matwarming court. They were honored first at the Matwarming ceremony and again at the Winter Sports Dance, sponsored by the Literary Society. The music was provided by Charlie Knight, a disc jockey from Power- 95. And, to add a new twist, the tra- ditional formal dance was changed to a beach party in the gym. The dance has been no big deal the last few years - it was time for a change. Besides, it was a lot of fun and a nice break from the winter, said senior Christy Rush. The Matwarming king and queen, wear- ing jams and beachwear, were re- crowned with leis and straw hats. ' But royalty was only part of the excitement. I was happy to be cho- sen king, but I was really just con- centrating on my match. I thought it would be a tough night, but I pinned my man in the first period, said Jim. Jim continued from this win to his final victory - third place at the Missouri State Wres- tling Tournament. I4 Matwarming The evening which Jim antici- pated to be tough actually was a difficult one for the Bulldogs. Matwarming took place the evening of the MRVC Conference Cham- pionships, a dual against the Cak Grove Panthers. The enthusiasm of a large, excited crowd - larger than the crowds in previous years - was quite an asset. However, even the crowd and unmatched Bulldog determination couldn't bring the Bulldogs the victory this year. The final score - 28 to 40 - will not be quickly forgotten, and will be the inspiration for even bet- ter efforts next year. King candidate Tom Patton, anticipating the match ahead, is intro- duced with his mother at the Matwarming ceremony. ,W K 9 Q ' 5 is Q. J I .. W Rv H , . X .
