ecrets Uncovered In Jesse J arnes' riginal Grave Xxfksx F 'Ko- On Saturday, October 14, 1978, digging began on the original gravesite of the infamous Jesse James at his birthplace northeast of Kearney. Tourists came from all over the United States to witness this historic event. By noon Sunday, archaeologists had found the coffin that James was removed from in 1902. Legend has it that when the skeleton was removed 76 years ago, one side of the coffin gave way, and old Jesse's bones fell into the grave. After 'the casket was exhumed on Tuesday the 17th, it was taken to a county warehouse to be carefully examined before restoring and placing it in a museum. Sure enough, those first grave diggers weren't all too careful. A lock of hair and a toe bone were among the treasures to be found inside. These relics were authenticated by laboratory tests to in fact be some of Jesse's remains. This event continues the saga of Kearney, birthplace and home of Jesse James.
