The 1978-79 National Honor Society's goal was to get involved in our school and community. To accomplish this goal, we carolled the community at Christmas, collected for a needy family, and presented tentative ideas for more involvement next year. We inducted 10 seniors, 3 juniors, and 12 sophomores into the club and voted to induct an honorary NHS member from the community. This year's inductee was Mr. Charles Pilant. We concluded the year by attending a Royals game and a picnic at Tryst Falls. 103

The Foreign Language Club has been through many changes since it first was established as the French-Russian Club in 1971. Through the years the name has been changed many times, and this year it was renamed the Spanish Clubi' open only to Spanish students. In the past, cultural activities were a big part of the club. They include teaching Spanish to elementary students, attending Crown Center's Mexican Fiesta, Marcel Marceau's performance, Bailes Espanoles, and Northwest Missouri States Foreign Language Day. At Christmas they travel to Children's Mercy Hospital, Maple Valley School for the Handicapped, and the Odd Fellow's Home to share in the holiday spirit with those less fortunate. This year they sponsor the concession stand at home track meets. Next year they hope to join American Field Service so they may sponsor more foreign students. In the past they have sponsored: Mario Saldana - Nicaragua, Flavia Albuquerque - Brazil, Hilo Nagai - Japan, Celina Lindo - El Salvadore, and Mochi Watanabe, Japan.
