'C' HORTAGES Two hours on a Sunday morning, waiting in line to let some clown rip you off at 9905 a gallon, complaining about the two gallon limit, wishing you could buy more. Wierd, wierd was the gas shortage. We all took it for granted for so many years. Never thought about it, one way or the other. But all of a sudden gas was something you did think about. You planned your trip to the gas sta- tion if friends called each other to report a short line or places where you could buy as much as you wanted. When it was over, the days of 306 cents a gallon gas were gone forever. There were paper shortages too, in the early to mid- seventies. There were meat shortages and electricity short- ages tcalled brownouts after what happened to your un- derwear when the lights suddenly dimmedl. There was even a toilet paper shortage that newsmen found difficult to treat seriously. And maybe you remember other shortages from your college years. Like height tl wish l were six feet talll. Or time tthree papers and four exams next weekl. Or money. Sure, there were lots of shortages. Certainly enough in- S X Q E 5 convenience and hassles to qualify these as the good old days. GASOLINE C ITCO -.. l iii- 5 Cn. PER GHLLQN .xv I i SUGAR XSS TOILET PAPER INTELLIGENCE WI C89 W 1 P OW' E R EXCESS While the early seventies were often characterized by shortages, there was also excess. The most obvious was an excess of shortages, but there were other excesses. few of which were missed at Kean. The Surgeon General warned we are becoming a nation of fatties. eating too much junk food containing too much cholesterol and too many additives. We often drank too much beer or other fine spirits, or smoked too many of those funny cigarettes. There were both excesses at the all- college parties and we often paid for our intemperance afterwards. Hell week was an excess ofjust about everything from raw eggs to humiliation but in the end it was the sister and brotherhood that made it all worthwhile, Occasionally we found ourselves in the middle ofa semester when each of five or six professors treated us like his was our only class and the homework piled up and threatened to overwhelm US. But there was plenty of friendship and sharing, two things that can never seem excessive. We traded notes and tutored each other and somehow we all pulled through. All we needed was a little help from our friends. I i li f . - A , l r t , , 1 E 19 lst ,, W 9. , VV W- I an Ji -w . X f ,,. .-'K YS. i f N Q, - N53 x 2. 1 L-..... I -, ' drerfcs-f . Both feared and loathed in the best Hunter Thompson style. How totally unexpected it often was. You borrowed a paper from your girlfriend who had the course last year. She had gotten a B. Now your staring at a big red F trying to figure how the hell to protest without getting even deeper into trouble. Politics. So close and yet so far. You became a candidate and for a brief moment you had your place in the sun. Lots of attention and hand shaking and being allowed to talk about how won- derful you are without sounding egotistic and all sorts of excitement. but then the vote count and gloom. Failure wasn't always so personal. There was Evel and his skycycle, the cen- tral figures in the biggest hype-and-fizzle routine since the Cardiff Giant. Richard Nixon, the penultimate fail- ure. The Great Mandate of '72. Law and Order. Secret Plan to stop Viet Nam. Dearp Spiro and the nattering nabobs of negativisms. H.R. Bob and the White House Plumbers. Fun time was overg the yearly grind had begun. This dedication to chosen goals was strikingly demonstrated at the first All- College Picnic, where nearly a thousand eager students worked at having a good time. They suc- ceedcd. There had been a moratorium on such parties, created during the summer by an administration plagued with complaints of noise and vandalism. complaints coming from the colleges neighbors. However, with not a little help from the enthusi- astically received Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and some free beer and burgers, CCB managed to get permission to show the incoming freshmen that college life isn't so bad after all. Next year, according to Coach Cunningham, the Squires should prove to be a devastating power, of course, once they learn to play without their hands. Captain Conceicao hopes to improve their defence next year with a play he has invented. Ac- cording to Captain Conceicao, five minutes before the game starts, two Squires stretch a huge sheet of Saran Wrap over the goal they will be defending. --.,,..4,, Q 4 'f 1, M-...,Z1I.,, wh ' 1. Guns were to be carried during peak crime time and bullets would be allowed to be in the gun rather than the officers shirt pocket as suggested by some. Luckily the Sloane Loungers were not also issued guns, judging by their reaction to their new furniture that was installed in their domain. The old couches and lounge chairs that hadn't already walked were removed and in their place cubical plastic seats were installed. A cross be- tween romper room and the Greyhound bus terminal, the new sloane put a smile on more than one sadistic face watching its inhabitants attempt to find positions to sit that were at least endurable if not com- fortable. l 4 8 22? The people of a brave little hamlet called Kean ignored the beast for as long as they could, but still persisted, until it threatened to gobble the pocketbooks of many a fair maiden and woodcutter. So the people of Kean, lacking a knight in shining armor, or even common sense, joined with the people from other hamlets throughout the state, thinking that since they were so impressed by appearances, others would be, too. A crowd of six thousand gathered at the gates ofthe castle Trenton, hoping with a confrontation with King Byrne and his misguided, but not necessarily evil, wizard, Dun-Gann. Neither one ap- peared. The crowd chanted. People made speeches. The crowd cheered. The crowd sat down. It was time to leave. The crowd stood up. Some threw rocks at the castle. and so the guards released their hounds. The crowd went home. They told each other they had done their best until they believed it themselves. ln the end, Tuition Hikes, and its twin, Cutbacks, held illimi- table dominion over all. So it goes. 62 .Zi 4 'J -'W T v, N , l 96 A A V, . ' V at Att- .W is Q ' 1- . . L ' ' if ,Z fra. T gg Q K . T ' is TT- le X Q Q . lm. la ' - .. .. 1' ? ,V , V Y iw egg? The skins on the tomatoes ripened. causing the spuds to turn their eyes in all directions. With so many birds and bees around. pollina- tion was on everyone's mind. so there was an awful lot of corn. Lettuce erossed hands and the weeds flourished. Those who were leaving the Garden State had sown all their wild oats and began looking for new soil for their roots. All of the copy in this section was written by him, except for a few quotes on pg. one which were borrowed from various movie critics. The wild solarized color print on this page was donated by Georgene Novak. All the solarized color photos in the book were donated by either Georgene or Joan Oziembo. Most of the other photos throughout the book were taken by myself. The exception are two groups of candids submitted by Kemper Morse in the Senior section, ll4 of the B8tW concert shots taken by Jim Shive, and about another 20 to 30 shots cumulatively collected from Ed Walsh, Randy and Harry. There was also one photo submitted each by Gary and Paul. The Headlines on pages 2 and 3 were gathered and arranged by Lori and Toni with some assistance from Lisa. The artworks in the Prologue and the rest of the book are all Harrys' except for a few Jim Callanan drawings in the Senior section. The layouts in the prologue and the epilogue were by Ed., Randy and myself The layouts in the senior section were by Randy. The remaining layouts in the book were primarily done by myself. Also doing some layouts, however, were Ned Randy and Gary with Chuck and Paul also helping. The Year and the Sports section are weaved together so neither would grow boring. The copy for The Year was written by Chris Jarocha and Frank Bolger with a few being supplied by Joe G., Randy, Buz and l. Hank wrote most of the sports copy. Buz and Joe G. also contributed a few. Ned supplied the sports captions, with Mark's assistance. T The candids in the senior section were plugged in by Gary, while Mark and Paul had the tedious job of assorting and identifying all the seniors. The Concert section is not divided into performers because I wanted the opportu- nity to use the best photos I had and this is not possible under the other system. The Epilogue was written by Ed and myself. - All the typing in the book, along with countless other little jobs that add up to be more time consuming and energy draining than any other aspect of the book were performed by Lori, Toni and Kathy with some aid given by Patti, Micki, Lisa, Lee, D.J ., Carrie, Donna, and Debo. The front and back cover were conceived by myself with Davy Schlatter doing the actual photo work. A special thanks to Steve's grandmother for being unbelievably cooperative at posing for the back cover and to Lisa for being talked into being the front cover girl. g The book has been published by the Hunter Publishing Company. Merin Studios photographed the seniors with Steve Merin once again being the bridge over troubled waters in both areas. The book is dedicated to all who have experienced Newark State CKeanJ College for all or any of the last four years. Hopefully you will enjoy it now and at future glances. l especially thank Ned, Lori, Toni, Kathy, and Gary for sacrificing so many summer hours to help me finish the book on time. And, of course, I thank my entire staff for never throwing in the towel. - qiggwa A Q '. 53525-1? gui. li l1i t -. He did not believe in prin- cesses. he did not believe in islands. he did not believe in bod, His father, the king told him that such things did not exist. As there were no princesses or islands in his fathcr's domains. and no sign of God, the young prince believed his father. Hut then, one day. the prince ran au ay from his palace, He came to the next land. There. to his astonishment, from every coast he saw islands. and on these islands. strange and troubling creatures whom he dared not name. As he tx as searching for a boat. a man in full evening dress ap- proached him along the shore. Are those real islands? asked the young prince, Of course they are real islands. said the man in evening dress. And those strange and troubling creatures? They are all genuine and authentic princesses. Then God also must exist! cried the prince! I am God, replied the man in full evening dress, with a bow. The young prince returned home as quickly as he could. So you are back. said his father. the king. I have seen islands, I have seen princesses, I have seen God, said the prince reproachfully. The king was unmoved. Neither real islands, nor real Princesses, nor a real God, exist. I saw themlu Tell me how God was dressed. God was in full evening dress. Were the sleeves of his coat rolled back? The prince remembered that they had been. The king smiled. That is the uniform ofa magician. You have been de- ceived. At this, the prince returned to the next land. and went to the same shore, where once again he came upon the man in full evening dress. My father the king has told me who you are, said the young prince indignantly. You deceived me last time. but not again. Now I know that those are not real islands and real princesses, because you are a magician. The man on the shore smiled. It is you who are deceived. my boy, In your father's kingdom there are many islands and many princesses. But you are under your father's spell. so you cannot see them. 'Ihe prince returned pensively home. When he saw his father, he looked him in the eyes. Father, is it true that you are not a real king, but only a magician'. ' The king smiled, and rolled back his sleeves, Yes, my son I am only a magician. Then the man on the shore was God. The man on the shore was another magician. I must know the real truth, the truth beyond magic. There is no truth beyond magic. said the king. The prince was full of sadness. He said. I will kill myself. Ihe king by magic caused death to appear. Death stood in the door and beckoned to the prince. The prince shud- dered. He remembered the beautiful but unreal islands and the unreal but beautiful princesses. Very well. he said. I can bear it, You sec, my son, said the king, you too now begin lu be a magician. Z3g st5r1'ea f-ftfffffisfiha .i Buf Whelen 4 Editor-in-chief Though asked almost 2,000 years ago, Pilate's question What is truth? has never been satisfactorily answered. Not that there haven't been many individuals who satisfied themselves as to the absolute nature of their beliefs - satisfied them- selves to the extent that they put to death those who would not share them - but none of these beliefs have been found to be unarguable, and few have lasted beyond the days of the individuals who first ad- vanced them. Perhaps you, like Ozymandias, are con- fident of your ability to transcend the bonds of time. Neither you, nor your truth, shall perish. Your beliefs will not change, for they are immutable. Good for you. On June 10, 1976 you go out into the world armed with absolutes. You should have no trouble making decisions. Maybe you're reading this twenty or thirty years after graduation. How many of your truths have survived the ravages of the years? Do you think the ones you hold today will fare any better? When you learn that truth is elusive in nature, that what is truth today may not be tomorrow, that what is true for some is not for others, that truth is an elusive and changing thing, you will have learned much. And when you learn that in spite of all this, truth still has some value and func- tion, you will have become a magician. nw-f--J 95... iq flop left!
