So you fight the traffic and the lousy weather and you make it to school. 'lhere are plenty' of empty parking spots left by those with less fortitude than yourself. You allowed more time than you needed and now you have a few minutes to kill. A cup ofcoffee would be great, so you head for the snack bar. You slog through the cold and wet, arriving in the Center dripping and sneezing. You get your coffee and settle in front ofthe fire in Sloan Lounge. lt's soon time for class, but youire only half through with your drink when a friend saunters in. Hey man, you goin' to class', ', he xyhines and you realize you've parked your car in Vaughn-Eames and your body in Sloan and that's where you're going to stay. VV21 For some unknown reason, that lU:5U class you selected at registration turned OLII to meet at 8:00 A.M. After two weeks of being twenty minutes late. you resign yourself to the fact that on the two days it meets. you will have to forego a shower. lt's 7:00 A.M. and you have just jumped behind the wheel of your Woo Olds. len minutes later. it finally' starts up. lhere's just about enough time to make it to class, but glancing down at your gas gauge you notice that you should run out a half mile from school. You pull into the Amoco station and get on line. Five dollars worth. please. Shit. there goes the pub tonight. Back on the road again. and you're thinking that if you press just alittle bit. you'll only be five minutes late. Fifty on Morris Avenuel' Hell that's not so bad. l'll just stay in the right lane so they won't notice my speed and overdue inspection sticker. Pop! Christ. there goes one of those baloney tires in the back. flat as old beer. Well. it looks like you're really going to be late now. Might as will get it over with. Howie ya doin there'. ' Oh. just fine officer. l'll be out of the way in no time . you reply. valiantly trying to shield your inspection sticker from his view. 'l'hat's OK. l'll stay here with my flashers on until you'rc fin . . . Say. when did you last have this bomb inspected'. ' Yeah l know it's overdue. but with my grandmother being in the hospital and all. I just haven't had any time . . Sorry. but the law's the law. Oh shit you have to get a poet yet. OK officer you're only doing yourjobf' just don't search the car pig, you mutter to yourself. And so it goes. Back on the road again, one hour late. Your hair is greasy. your hands are covered with crap from the tire you have a fifty dollar ticket in your mouth and you need a new tire. You finally pull into the lot and park in the last row. You dash to your building and up four flights. gasping for breath and a cigarette. You can finally see the door. on which you can barely' make out a sign that mocks silently. Class cancelled. 3 ij ,. xox.. V W -wil' ' . lf you thought liberating France was hard. try finding a parking spot on campus. After risking the chance of making your parents childless by crossing North Ave.. you have to avoid running doyvn a Philosophy professor on the picket line carrying a sign which reads: . . . Life is an Illusion . . . l C'an't Pay my Rent . . The only possible place to find a parking spot is in the rear of Vaughn- Eames lot A the only problem being, the time wasted in applying for a visa. lf the more convenient spots are not occupied by other cars, they are occupied by public opinion, civil indignation and a painful bruise. After class lets out. and you've had a whirlwind but meaningful relationship with a cloaked man in the bushes, he tells you that the ticket on your car is a municipal one. .fr fa . -x 'fa
