'f' X ' 4 - - - A A ' if I 3 PV' ff. william shiebler, student organization president one ot our maior problems here is a lack ot real pride in newark state. many students hesitate to detend our college and are otten quick to ioin in undue criticism ot newark state. simply because we lack a big name iden- tity such as the ivy league or big ten, we sometimes relegate ourselves to the rank ot a second rate institu- tion. this is a tallacy. we are in the midst ot a thriving, expanding college community which is retlecting qual- it 1 quality ot institution, quality ot curriculum, quality otlintellect. a tactor which tends to make the climate here uncertain is our recent rapid growth. ten years ago, newark state was a small, urban school taced with extinction. in the short period ot time since then, newark state has been given a chance tor a rebirth. in the last ten years it has grown tar more than it did during the previous one hundred. this expansion in size, population, and cur- riculum has not always been a smooth one. we have suttered trom growing pains. there is otten a clash between new and old ideas. it is like a tug ot war, and many times the student is in the middle, never doing any ot the tugging. at times there seems to be a lack ot taith in the student mind on the part ot everyone, including the students themselves. student government here is a prime exam- ple ot this. it is hampered by taults within its own students and trom without. it lumbers along in its own restricted, minute area. seldom really touching upon anything that will retlect its true character or purpose- the student. with its motions, committees, proposals and declarations, it rarely leaves a mark upon its environment. tor instance, we, as students in an expand- ing educational process have never ettectively estab- lished a method ot presenting our views on the curricu- lum. this should be a right and responsibility ot every it I - g A - Ab '3- Y. is.-gr . - ss student. our past ettorts through the newspaper and petitions have tailed. the real need lies in responsible, reliable student criticism. we must open up channels ot communication so that the student can present his views in a mature manner with teasible alternatives and con- structive new ideas. this involves serious research and hard work on the part ot the student. naturally, these views should be received with some respect by those people who are responsible tor our curriculum. students should also present their views on dress codes, dormitory regulations, tuture physical growth ot the campus, and any aspect which concerns newark state now or in the tuture. we must make our voices heard in the community and the state by taking action to aid the surrounding urban communities with their problems. we must concern ourselves with the educational problems tacing our state. the role ot the newark state student in the tuture will be a vital, ditticult one. many problems challenge him on and ott campus. the student here will surmount them. he will be able to do so because he is in newark state: a place where old men have younger minds and spirits than some ot their students, where his views and ideas can be accepted with taith, where intellectual growth comes trom a challenging curriculum and taculty. atter tour years here, it will be a truly sad parting. i have come to see many things to be proud ot at newark state and i am sorry that i cannot be a part ot the promising years in the tuture. we can be proud ot our tellow students and their achievements, ot our constant- ly expanding campus, ot the many roiects, present and planned, which will expand newarkb state intellectually. there is a greatness here which tew ot us realize now, but i am sure we will recognize in the near tuture.
