four years-fhe world has changed and so have we. in fhe beginning, we were jusf anofher group of fresh- men af anofher college in fhe vasf complex of american higher educafion. foday, we are sfill jusf anofher gradu- afing class in fhaf complex. 'une, l965-fhe graduafion scene is repeafed over and over again, buf fhere is somefhing 'rhaf malces fhese american graduafes differ- enf from 'rhe resf of fhe previous graduafes of american colleges and universifies. our values, oufloolcs, and ideas have changed in fhese pasf four years, buf 'rhis is nof unique in college. why, fherefore, should we be differenf from any previous graduafes? each generafion has ifs frials, errors, failures. and suc- cesses, buf loolcing baclc i see four years of college life filled wifh all of fhe fhings 'rhaf malce a person a lifelong sfudenf. i also see four years fhaf changed fhe course of hisfory and 'rhus changed our lives. as sfudenfs we have seen fhe sfarf of fhe space age and man's firsf affempfs fo discover and delve info fhe unexplored vasfness of fhe universe. we wifnessed fhe sfarf of 'rhe nuclear era, fhe new fronfier and fhe shorf ferm of a youfhful presidenf. greaf as fhe american sfory is, if is no'r wifhouf shame. during our college days we regreffully learned 'rhaf indi- vidual merif is nof enough for a cifizen 'ro be equal. fhere are barriers which prevenf our cifizens from achieving equalify. as sfudenfs we rallied whenever we were displeased. sfu- denfs rallied for causes, againsf causes and fhey rallied againsf each ofher. fhey argued wifh courage and idealism. fhis is democracy! 'rime passed swiffly and necessify sfimulafed our every- day vocabulary. each word recalled an evenf or person which was enfered info hisfory. phrases lilce: firsf cafho- lic presidenf, john glenn, ecumenical council, casfro- cuba. au hgo, lchrushchev and counfless ofhers. jusf af 'rhe poinf when we fhoughf we would see world peace and domesfic franquilify, our dream was shaf- 'rered by a shof . . . assassinafion!
