Much of what we learn is taught by example, and it is often from this kind of teaching that we learn most. The ideal of de- votion must be taught in this manner. Devotion to a profession is always admirable, if that profession be teaching, however, it is a necessity as well. The class of 1968 therefore dedicates its yearbook to two faculty members who have exemplified the ideal of devotion to their profession. With pride and honor the 1963 Memorabilia is dedicated to Miss Betsy Davison and Dr. Jean Richardson. Miss Davison was as new to Newark State as we were in the fall of 1959. She soon became well known to all of us, not only in her oHicial capacity as Coordinator of Student Activities, but also as an interested and reliable friend of the student body. The long hours Miss Davison spends each day on campus are but one indication of the devotion she manifests for her profes- sion. When coupled with the genuine interest she possesses for all she does, this is truly an admirable trait, and one worthy of imitation. Admirable, too, is the efficient manner in which she has at- tended to the coordination of myriad student activities, and still found time to participate so enthusiastically in many of them. She is a person we have come to depend upon, because this de- pendence is fostered by a confidence in her ability to help and the surety that she will do so. Truly, Miss Davison has exemplified a genuine devotion to her profession and to the interests of Newark State College students. , Dr. Jean Richardson has displayed in her teaching a profes- sional devotion worthy of emulation. Students find her classes not only interesting and stimulating, but also practical and ap- plicable. Much of the value of her teaching, however, is not merely in content, but in the methods and manner in which she presents it. She is not only a gifted teacher, but one who practices what she preachesf' and for this she is held in the greatest of esteem. Moreover, Dr. Richardson is interested in her students beyond a professional capacity. As advisor to the Traditions and Pro- cedures Committee, she is concerned with the establishment of a heritage of tradition at Newark State. As a friend, she is always willing to offer help and advice to any student who desires it. In this way she has devoted countless hours of her time to both pro- fessional and non-professional counseling. Dr. Iean Richardson typifies the type of teacher we would like to become. Her devotion to her students and to the creed of teaching she professes is one we shall endeavor to achieve. of our experiences appear more significant than others. Time will be the true judge of their 'Ci I value, but for the present we know that, among the memories of college which we shall cherish are those of two faculty members who have in- spired us with their devotion to their profession. Thus, with much gratitude and appreciation, the Class of 1963 dedicates its yearbook to Miss Betsy Davison and Dr. jean Richardson. lean Richardson jf As we look back on our college years, certain Y, Memorabilia the things worth to be remembered . . Our yearbook is predicated upon the conscious pursuit of those things which have occurred dur- ing our college career that are truly worthy of being remembered. It is to be a reflection of the oarious aspects of college-the people, events, and experiences which have characterized our years at Newark State. I To The Class of 1963: Year after year as each class goes forth as graduates from the College, our hopes and aspirations go with you, first of all, for success in our profession of teaching, next, for success in life. It is this latter phase of success I should like to em- phasize this year. Man has always thought his current dilemma, in whatever age he lived, to be climactic. Wfe, too, feel that in this year four own lives and the world at large is indeed in a climactic lstage. Rather than stand back and watch it explode, or stand ion top of it and have it explode under us, we are each in a lposition to do something about it. The learning you have ,been acquiring for the past four years, information of the lworld in which you live and the people who live with you gin that world, must not stop at this point, but must be ac- icelerated and continued so that you each may make your irendezvous with destiny in seeing that you are informed and Earticulate about the need of world controls of the forces of inations, that you do something about it in its early stage of ,your lifetime, lest there bc no lifetime for any of us. The itraining for leadership has been your privilegcg thc role of 'leadership is your obligation. Sincerely yours, EUGENE G. VVILKINS President , e-R'-1 Eugene G. AMSDEN The privilege of working with an interested advisor, who was a friend as well, was granted to the Class of 1963 in the person of Mrs. WVinifred Amsden. Mrs. Amsden was an interested par- ticipant at our class meetings and attended the functions we held. Her lively, animated spirit endeared her to us all, and her eagerness to help won our respect and admiration. We shall always appreciate the interest Mrs. Amsden has exhibited in our class, and for this we deeply and sincerely thank her. 'H 'iff JAMES C. All Hail, O Newark State! Harry Wilson CLASS HI TORY Four years ago we entered Newark State. Most of us came directly from high school, but some of us did not. We soon discovered, however, that it mattered little whether we had been a student, or a housewife, or a la- borer previouslyg the important thing was that we were now all peers, about to embark upon a college career. VV e became acquainted with one another during the three days of Freshman Orientation. At this time, to the 'a tune of 'QI can hammer with one hammer, we learned that ours was a uspecialv class with a great potential, a class of which much was expected. But if this praise caused us to feel unduly superior, the Sophomores soon squelched us, and with no regard whatsoever for our potential, we were hazed. I ilk' sf' , v if Hazing, however, brought us even closer together, 5 3 as we anxiously formed threes or banded together in ll A groups for security. The number of times we sang f if 2 H Sophomores make the world go ,r-ound, or carried - 4 ' ' - books, or proposedmarriages was forgotten amid the f A fun and din of Senior Court, and once the coveted X .,,WW , beanie was thrust upon our heads, we knew we belonged B-.a,,,Ml' I , at last! 3 l Ii if if Our first year rolled along rapidly. We cluttered every inch of wall space with election posters in the fall, attended class meetings which were always sparked by the presence of our jovial Class Advisor, Mrs. Amsdeng we danced at Friday Frolicsg and participated in the Carnival under the Big Top. We even won an award at the latter event for our class booth, our famous ,'Zacherlyv. After a flurry of exams and summer job applications Cto get in those 65 hoursl, our Freshman year ended. W 5 I 1 The 'Big Thing', Sophomore year, was to make certain we could be distinguished from the Freshman. Our class blazers had arrived during the summer, which solved the problem for some of us. Others carried ostensibly - and audibly - the chief distinguishing symbol of a sophomore: the flutophone. These melodious instruments resounded from new quarters: renovated rooms in the Keane Library. The grace and charm of these old rooms rendered them the natural setting for our music department. The new science wing had also been fin- ished during the summer and, even if it was chairless, we wel- comed it as a certain sign of progress on campus. In accordance with the erection of this wing, a major cur- riculum in Science was opened to us, and then to all subse- quent classes. Similarily, an English major program was in- augurated, of which we may boast the iirst graduates. Our class was also the first which gh ,' T' ,f 'VAX was required to spend a week of our A , f ag.. f . ,g 4 sophomore year at the School of 1 ' --- Conservation in Stokes State For- . .lf lb. 4 k est. VVe attended teas, made a difficult selection, were hazed, and lived through the horror of Hell Night- all of which entitled us to be- come brothers or sisters in one of the fine Greek groups on campus. Ianuary and February brought some parking spaces, and seats in the Snack Bar because of the absence of the Iuniors and Seniors. But it was an absence which weighed more heavily upon us this year than it had the last year, because we knew it would soon be our turn to vacate the premises and invade the Held of teaching. j ' ' ' A-'lf ix'- Carnival Season approached again, this time with booths erected in the parking lot, and we found our- selves decorating and managing the booths of our re- spective organizations. We cleaned up the Carnival de- bris in a torrential downpour, swept the parking lot, and all of a sudden it was June. ' W- h 1 Jw Junior year was upon usl This was the year for rings Q 1 .Q - school rings and engagement rings. We experienced a short semester for the Hrst time and, to balance it, a - relatively unencumbered Christmas vacation - also for f - the first time. junior Practicum afforded us our first professional experience, and it was, for most of us, an exciting and rewarding one. 'wi A junior Tea awaited us when we returned in March, the first of many opportunities, formal and informal, to recount our adventures out in the fieldv. Three months of concentrated studies, highlighted by the Carnival and the appearance of the Highwaymen, formed our last semester. Climaxed by the Junior Prom, our third year at Newark State was brought to a close. The most difficult feature of Senior year was reconciling ourselves to the fact that we actually were Seniors. We, who only yesterday were ahammering with one hammerv and singing Deep and Widef, were in the final round of college. We soon realized, however, that the hurly-burly of Senior year left us little spare time, as we were immedi- ately caught in the throes of placement, interviews, questionnaires and job ap- plications. Somberly we embarked upon our Senior Teaching, cognizant of the fact that this was our final testing ground before we assumed control of our own classrooms. When we returned, we were aware that this was our last semester at Newark State. Consequently, the lit- tle aspects of daily routine became dear to us: the free hours in the snack bar, the sorority, fraternity, and club meet- ings, the stimulating classes, the games - all of these took on a new precious- X. ..-f 'Ft ness because they were to be ours only a short time longer. And yet, as Senior year sped toward a close, we could not help but anticipate the future with eagerness. A rush of Senior activities - teas, luncheons, the Prom, Commence- ment - enriched and endeared our last days at Newark State, and suddenly our college career was over. Much is expected of us, it is our duty to live up to that expectation. Newark State has provided the academic back- ground and educational training which are our necessary tools, it is up to us to make the fullest use of them. 'What we will become is unknown to us at present, just as what we are now was unknown to us four years ago. What we hope to become is still an Ideal, for we have not yet had the opportunity to attempt it, but that opportunity is now before us, and with the help of Cod, we shall strive to achieve it. -Q5 A. -Q. , mi i A - 9 if -3 . x 5 l 1 Y f r s W- A' 4 ' 5 . si UK vi Gif Faculty if if Administration Q! Representatives of all the organizations at Newark State met for a week at the spacious and accommodating camp in the Catskills maintained by the Herald Trib- une. The purpose of the Conference, as has been the purpose of the two preceding it, was to explore, discuss, and learn how to develop traits of good leadership. A team of graduate students from Colum- bia University under the chairmanship of Dr. Kenneth Herrold served as trainers for the session. Participation in, and evaluation of the T,' groups they moderated was the focal point of the Conference. Cuest lecturers augmented the program, and social events fulfilled it. The students that attended the Leadership Conference gleaned from it not only ideas and methods of leadership, hut also the experience of living and working together as a group of individuals. seeking to define and accomplish personal as well as group goals and developing from these the attitudes and attributes of a leader. GUIDE L B The members of the Guides Club are the oflicial college hosts and hostesses who cor- dially welcome and conduct tours for visitors from other colleges and universities, high school F.T.A. groups, and newly arrived Fresh- men. Under their sponsorship of the Big-Sister- 1 Brother program, this group has helped the incoming Freshmen to get better acquainted with their new surroundings. N. It keeps Newark State students informed of local cultural events and obtains tickets to these events for student use. The SCID office posts announcements of up-and-coming pertorinanees. whether they be of a dramatic or musical nature, and cooperates in purchasing tickets to them for individ- uals or groups from NSC. Similarly, SCID fosters an awareness of the lectures, museum exhibits, and other local cultural events of interest by providing informa- tion concerning them to students. The role of the SCID office is an important one, for it caters to the intellectual and cultural appetites of Newark State students. THE NATIONAL ST DENT ASSOCI T10 A college student should be aware of the goings-on in interna- tional affairs. The National Stu- dent Association is the medium through which important world events are conveyed to college cam- puses throughout the country. At Newark State, N.S.A. sponsors a di- versified program featuring discus- sions, foreign exchange students, news bulletins, and lectures, all of which are designed to instill within students a greater awareness and knowledge of pertinent interna- tional events. Its intention was to present before the stu- dents of the college, speakers who would interest them, and also challenge and expand their intellectual scope. This year Norman Cousins, john Ciardi, Virgilia Peter- son, and Paul Goodman addressed the student body in a series of interesting and thought-provoking lectures. fa-wt 'G' 1oHN CIARDI Noiwmn Cousins 'sa VIRGILIA PETERSON Q 5. iii T fG21'Z5'f3il ..sQ.iif l ' O . The residence hall, which has a capacity of one hundred and fifty women, has made it possible for students from distant areas to attend the college. Perhaps the most significant aspect of White- man Hall, however, is that it is the beginning of an expan- sive program of growth which is taking place at Newark State and which will result in a richer campus life. The tentative date is Saturday, June 2, 1968. In order to keep abreast of changes in names and addresses, our Senior Class Sec- retary will send out forms each year which should he filled out and returned. This will avoid delays in receiving any class in- formation, and facilitate the plans for a suc- cessful reunion. The 1963 Memorabilia staff wishes to express its gratitude to the fol- lowing persons, without whose help this publication would not have been poss ible: Mr. Edward Bathmann and the Rae Publishing Company for their co- operation and assistance in the production of this yearbook. Mr. Richard Cross, of Richard's Studio, South Orange, New jersey, for his fine photography and the hours of camera-toting around campus. Mrs. Irene Reifsnyder, for her cooperation and guidance as our Advisor. Mr. YV. Carl Burger, our Art Advisor. The Administration, for its cooperation and assistance. Mr. james Day and the Independent staff for use of their pictorial and literary files. Miss Lois De Chairo and Mr. Frank Alves for their ever-present assist- ance when help was needed. The custodians Arthur, john, and Pat for the favors they have done and the doors they have unlocked for us. l P ug- 1.3 TICD NI.'XllKlCXN'lCll Art mul lsllljllllf lfzlitor XYe sincerely thank our eainera-shy editor for his able assistance in the plan- ning of this hook. livery page he tout-hed has bound hiin to us as an honorary member of the Class of 1963. ur years at Newark State College have come to a close. The friendships we have made, the sororities and fraternities to which we gave our allegiance, the clubs and committees to which we be- longed, and the activities in which we participated are too rapidly becoming part of our past. Now, we pause for perhaps the last time to formally recollect that past. VV e cherish the people, events, and influences which have comprised the memorabilia of our lives thus far, now more precious to us with the consummation of our college career. ' Our years in school and college have helped us realize not all, but many of the answers to the riddle of life. It remains for us, armed with what we have gleaned, to confront whatever the future may hold. These four years at Newark State have prepared us to find and to face our individual course in life. The world and its challenge waits for us. This is not the end, it is the beginning. Lithographed by 9 RAE PUBLISHING C0 282 Grove Avenue Cedar Grove, N.
