I Eugene G. Wilkins President To The Class of 1962: Though it is customary to laud in general terms the graduating class while with didactic forelinger one points out the way to higher and greater glories, I wish to depart from this procedure to apologize to you. The apology is due for having recruited you in 1958 to come to college in beautiful new buildings on an expansive campus and then, after a pleasant freshman year in such surroundings, having pulled the rug out from under you so that most of the class landed back in the old semi-deserted building in Newark for much of your sophomore year. But the apology is tempered because of what happened to you as a class while in the old building. You accepted the challenge to make it back into a college, you were creative in organizing yourselves and in setting up your own program of college life. That which might have been received as banishment into exile by less hardy souls was turned by you into a refuge in which was welded a class . spirit seldom encountered, a gass spirit which was to exemplify your group for the remaining two years of your college 1 e. Now that the apology is finished, I again raise a wavering linger to point to an un- certain direction in which I hope lies the ground which is higher and greater, knowing full well as alumni you will return on campus to tell us if it were so. May the journey forward be a good one. Sincerely yours, Eugene G. Wilkins President
