JANE PLENTY D E D I C T D We have stated in the theme that our progress will depend on what we learn from the past and what we dare in the fu- ture. How fitting it is that our two dedications are each a part of this whole-one to repre- sent the rich heritage of faithful loyalty to the students of Newark State College-the other to forecast the warm interrelation- ships destined to reach fruition in today's tomorrow. Devotion is a time-honored attribute. When it is fostered by love, nurtured by sensitivity, and crowned by intelligence, it is a gift both beautiful and rare. Mrs. lane Plenty is so gifted. Forty years have passed since this warm and gracious lady first began her tour of duty in the realm of higher education at the Newark Normal School. Forty years . . . and she has served gallantly and tire- lessly. First as a teacher, she showed the way to a deeper appreciation and understand- ing of numbers and formulae, then as the Mathematics Department head, she sparked her division on to greater heights, finally, she served as the ever-present manager of the book store. Mrs. jane Plenty stopped teaching in 1954. Unlike so many others whose retire- ment brings oblivion, Jane Plenty only re- tired to render a continuing service to the school. But now in '62 she says her final good- by to Newark State. To devotion such as this, we pay our highest tribute. Fred Marder is a young man whose be- lief in and respect for students has en- deared him to each of us. We have seen his deep concern for the students of Newark State College. We have felt he understood and shared the problems that were of im- portance to us. - His guidance and inspiration have led us to accept new responsibilities and posi- tions of leadership. His friendship and his cheerful disposition have meant an ever- open door to those seeking advice or en- couragement. As an educator he walks before us. As a friend he is among us-in all ways and at all times. The Class of 1962 takes great pride in dedicating our Memorabilia to jane Plenty and Fred Marder. Through our association with them, we have learned to love and appreciate these individuals. For their tireless efforts and unending faith in our behalf-we thank them! PR xf Q9 FRED IVIARDEP W- --'Er V+. Our yearbook is directed toward the new, the differ- ent, the progressive. In an era of atoms and rapid pace, it appears unusual to study the old and to see the rebirth of traditions. Yet, progress is based upon foundations of past ex- periences. Our progress will depend largely upon the way in which we transform our past mistakes into mean- ingful learnings. Without these previous failures and successes to reHect upon, we cannot hope to mature fully. It is with this support that we move into the new and the different. What awaits us, we do not know. As we travel forward, we will forget some of the events that have influenced and shaped us, but we shall always carry with us our memorabilia-the events worthy of being remembered. af -ng km-:.Ql5TZf1 gHiff.' Wilkins President To The Class of 1962: Though it is customary to laud in general terms the graduating class while with didactic forelinger one points out the way to higher and greater glories, I wish to depart from this procedure to apologize to you. The apology is due for having recruited you in 1958 to come to college in beautiful new buildings on an expansive campus and then, after a pleasant freshman year in such surroundings, having pulled the rug out from under you so that most of the class landed back in the old semi-deserted building in Newark for much of your sophomore year. But the apology is tempered because of what happened to you as a class while in the old building. You accepted the challenge to make it back into a college, you were creative in organizing yourselves and in setting up your own program of college life. That which might have been received as banishment into exile by less hardy souls was turned by you into a refuge in which was welded a class . spirit seldom encountered, a gass spirit which was to exemplify your group for the remaining two years of your college 1 e. Now that the apology is finished, I again raise a wavering linger to point to an un- certain direction in which I hope lies the ground which is higher and greater, knowing full well as alumni you will return on campus to tell us if it were so. May the journey forward be a good one. Sincerely yours, Eugene G. Wilkins President an 5 'Wx l'Ft:f'x HARRIET E. WHITEMAN Dean of Students 'll-5 ALTON D. O'BRIEN Dean of College I hi 'Tiff EDXVARD W. It has been a distinction of our class to have traveled in the new paths of the school, although those paths were muddy and vague at first, and to have traveled in the old paths of the college, through the stately and seldom silent halls of the old building. Being the first class to begin our Freshman year at the new campus made college life a fascinating experience. We saw many modern innovations come to the fore. We saw our infant school growing and were fortunate-participating in the dedication of the new campus and watching Norman Cousins receive an honorary doctoral degree from N. S. C, The library and gymnasium were dedicated and we were a part of the ex- cited audience who listened to and saw such notables as Clement Atlee, Ogden Nash and Eleanor Roosevelt in the beginning presentations of the College Lecture Seriesf, Who can forget the oaktag frosh signs and the blue and grey dinks we were forced to wear? Many of us wished we weren't freshmen during hazing week! The books that had to be carried and the nursery rhymes that had to be recited were degrading to us then, but truly fond memories to us now. The confusion of the first few weeks in college and the upper classmen who were so quick to help us- The only way to get to room 150 is to use the elevator. Haven't you seen the swimming pool yet? -will never be forgotten. Through it all, we learned quickly. We passed through the trials and tribulations of being freshmen without too many errors and courageously took on the responsibilities accompanying the promotion to our Sophomore year. We arrived confidentl in September to begin our second year at Newark State College. We moved from the hazed,' to the hazers, from the confused to the con- fusersf' Then came the awareness of the fact that some of us would attend classes two days a week at the old building in Newark. This hit us hard. How were we going to get there? Who wanted to leave the new campus? After being there a while our opinions changed. New and steady friendships were made and traditions we were unsure of became more meaningful. Cratefulness surrounded us for the opportunity of' sharing some of the feelings of Newark State at the -place in which those feelings originated. Allegiances were divided between the old and the new. At the new campus, we took part in the Christmas party and the combined Saint Patrickis Day-Birthday party. Who do you know in this sorority? What do these letters mean? They look Creek to mel The teas, meeting the fraternity and sorority members, trying to decide whether or not to join, the hazing, singing in the Snack Bar, the dinners, taking our loyalty oaths-who can forget in that second year, the excitement, or disappointment, concerning sororities or fraternities! Q More friendships grew when we went, on a voluntary basis, for a week of outdoor experiences, to Stokes State Forest. The Lecture Series expanded and we heard the orations of Madame Pandit, Harri- son Salisbury, Harry Colden and Willy Ley. The emptiness of college was felt when the juniors and Seniors left for Practicum and Student Teaching. Their absence had its benefits: seats in the Snack Bar and Cafe- teria, the abundance of parking spaces in our overcrowded lot. And with it all came the realization that next year, we would be the ones-teaching. . HISTORY Somehow we managed to fulfill the academic requirements and move on to our Iunior year. With apprehension and excitement, we joined the ranks of upperclassmen. Our third year held great achievements. The first advance was the advent of the Leadership Conference. Held at the Schiff Reservation for the purpose of discussing campus problems and developing leaders, the conference proved to be a huge success. Another great step forward was the building of the Science Wing, giving us much of the extra space needed to accommodate the rapidly expanding college enrollment. The Reflector underwent great mental and physical strain. After much tension and verbal fisticuffs, the editors instituted the Independent-a new newspaper, a new title, a new editorial policy. Our speakers in the Lecture Series were William Douglas, Max Lerner, Martin Luther King and Margaret Webster. Birth of a Nation came to Newark State in our junior year and caused consider- able controversy. Before we realized it, our first semester ended with exams and the long-awaited Christmas vacation. When we left school in December, we wondered how we would return in March after the moot experience called Junior Practicum. Following our pre- view of teaching-to-come, we returned in March in good health, determined to be the best teachers N.S.C. had ever produced. Our Junior Prom was the climax of that year, bringing with it the laughter and tears of leaving the third year of school to become the Seniors of Newark State College. Our last year brou ht expansion. The physical school was changed by the exten- sion of the Cafeteria and Snack Bar. The relocation of the Book Store meant crowded conditions for several months, but the results were well worth waiting for. A new game room was built and perhaps the most significant occurance was the start of the dormitory, symbolizing our hopes for a campus college. We presented the Senior Show and Senior Court, both events of great importance to each of us. We were visited by a large group of foreign students who were studying at Columbia University. It was educational and exciting for the visitors and for those of us who met them. The Coronation Ball was held in December. The I.F.S.C. initiated a new tradition in college-the selection of the F raternity-Sorority Queen. Leaving for our Senior Teaching experience, we sadly acknowledged that when we returned in March we would have but a few short months left in our college career. Those months passed quickly. We tried to fill them with as much activity as possible. We were cognizant that soon we would be leaving a place that has brought us many friendships and fond memories. The Senior Prom, held at Braidburn Country Club, was the culmination of our social activities at N.S.C. Graduation brought us to the realization that another door of life was opening and we were entering. We shall now endeavor to provide the link between the tradition-filled past and the problem-laden future we challenge. Our vocation awaits, education is our tool. We will go forward-for we have before us a world to be born under our footsteps . . . T f :if vw ,Q .lx 4' Q if ' .J 55 G ,i I . 5 1 'S ! aa gi x . ' 1 5 31.1. What We have gained will be our sustaining force. What we have learned will bring us closer to how we will proceed. We shall Walk from our college each in different directions. The place we reach will differ for all of us. The doors from which we leave Newark State have many roads. It is now our responsibility to choose that road which is most suitable to us and our desires. We leave possessing a solid foundation upon which We Will build. We have a strong basis of education, yet We must continue to learn- to build our minds. We have been molded and brought to this point in our lives by those people who are among our greatest influences- our teachers and professors. It is now up to us to enlighten and inspire as We have been enlightened and inspired. And so, the end of otu' college life has now become the beginning of our futLu'e . . .
