His constant probing of the world which he inhabits, his investigation into outer space, and his questioning of his own soul are an indication of his earnest attempt to understand life. The Class of 1960 gives this yearbook a twofold dedication: First, to man ' s ideal of freedom to comprehend, enjoy, and live his existence in the fashion most applicable to his individual character. Secondly, to the example, leadership, and inspiration of two persons who exemplify this ideal: Mr. Rychard Fink and Mr. Vance Snyder. Mr. Rychard Fink has personified the intellectual pursuit of man by his institution of the 1958 lecture series entitled The Intellectual and the Democratic Public, his organization of the John Dewey Centen- nial and Lecture Series, his leadership of the honor society Kappa Delta Pi, and his stature as an educator and man. Mr. Vance Snyder exemplifies man ' s dedication to service and the welfare of others through his constant advice, inspiration, and labor as advisor to the Class of 1960, his professional service to Newark State College in the production layout and printing of important col- lege publications including the four Middle States Self-Evaluation Re- ports as well as the Dedication Brochures of the D ' Angola Gymnasium and the Nancy Thompson Library, his enthusiasm and practicality as an educator, and his dignity as an individual. Thus we devote the 1960 MEMORABILIA to a twofold dedication, each complimenting the other, for of what worth is an ideal if men do not live up to it? VANCE SNYDER Ywan -■ HI ■ HI aw jee s 1 -jAWPBai ni | ; -j ' ■---fT(pr ' ,..;;..  «K — An artist must capture the spirit of his world view as weil as the majestic blue of the sky; a novelist reveals his view of life as he constructs the fibers of his plot; and a year- book presents the flavor of a college year rather than a sta- tistical annual. The existence of an institution for 365 days is not the sub- stance that must be portrayed. The impression that a college imposes upon each individual is the essential spirit to be con- sidered. Life offers its bounty to man. How the individual governs his subsistence determines his level of fulfillment. Every indi- vidual develops, as a result of his experience, knowledge, skill, and understanding, a highly individualistic interpreta- tion of life. Through the medium of the 1960 MEMORABILIA, we shall present the stimuli that have affected the members of Newark State College during the 1959-1960 academic year. The extent of reciprocation depends largely upon the perceiver. Each has taken of this year and selected from his memories in order to create in the present his FORMULA FOR LIVING tov ard the future. ft! M .: .. ' ■ . ;.-■. The KNOWL- EDGE that they have so fervently expounded has ac- cumulated into a foundation of understanding and appreciation. Upon this base we must continue to construct a sounder framework that shall extend the heritage of knowledge to those we educate. 12 ■ EUGENE G. WILKINS President B.A., North Texas State College; M.A. Ph.D., Columbia University. and TO THE CLASS OF 1960 The years grow short as college days blend into your professional careers. We hurriedly try to tell you all we would wish you to know about this splendid work of being a teacher. But there is so much to say that we stand speechless as on a train platform waiting for friends to depart, all the while making small talk when we know there are great and important things to be said. And yet we should know our telling you will never make you realize the excitement and love of teaching— only experience can do that, not always the initial experience but that which comes from a span long enough to give pers ' pectivs. The Class of ' 60 is one of transition. You have seen your alma mater emerge from the cacoon-like housing on the old campus and spread its multi-colored wings on the new campus larger by more than a hundred fold. It is the new tradition that you carry forth as graduates. May all success and peace be yours. Sincerely yours, Eugene G. As we, the Class of 1960, prepare to enter our chosen profession, we look back— trying to make a summation of our achievements at Newark State. What have we gained; what have we learned; what is that single factor that will guide our paths in the years to come? Above all else, that which encompas- ses our entire growth is UNDERSTANDING. Excellent facilities, such as lectures, organiza- tions, exposure to a mature, wholesome environment, and a well-chosen faculty have been placed at our disposal, The long-range reward for availing oneself of these faculties is an opportunity to understand not only the present, but how to cope with life in the future. Various conducive situations have led us further toward the goal of understanding children. Applying theories in our practicum situations, discussing and delving into the opinions of the experts— all these have broadened our understanding of children. Perhaps most important of all we have gained is a more thorough understanding of ourselves. Our goals, our hopes, our disappointments, our knowledge have become so crystallized through maturity that we no longer what but have begun to realize why. 29 ' K u S HB i m am $R PATRICIA BOGAN ACKEN General Elementary Handicapped - Mentally Retarded A.C.E.-N.J.S.E.A. 3, 4; Glee Club 1, 2; Women ' s Basketball 1; Women ' s Volleyball 1, 2; Intramural Sports 2; Nu Sigma Tau 2, 3, 4. And in a like manner, the Class of ' 60 could write off the past four years, making the period beginning September 12, 1956 and ending June 9, 1960 a mere series of uncon- nected events. We shall not be so ingenuous; what a shallow account this chronological listing would be! No, we must pre- sent more than events: we must present a pattern which will enable the beholder to comprehend the forces that promoted these events and to appreciate the ideas which may have resulted from them. A history, no matter how broad or narrow its scope, must have a starting point. Ours is Orientation Day. It was a day of many parts— ability inventories, welcomes by Dean O ' Brien and Dr. Whiteman, a prophecy by President Wilkins that the Class of ' 60, which numbered 245, was the first of the large classes which will become a part of the regular picture at the new campus,- we met our counselors, entered in a college sing, and became concerned about hazing. This was our first full day of college and indeed it con- veyed a feeling of the future. We were becoming aware of the differences between college and high school: the freedom that college granted and with it the responsibility that we assumed; the sensation of aloneness which when shared by 244 other students dissolved into a feeling of oneness; the realization that this was a new life— how best should we live it? While all the facets of college life were presented to us in this, our Freshman year, it might be termed The Social Year. It began with the trip to Bear Mountain and was climaxed by the Seaweed Shuffle and a trip to Rye Beach. Similar major events (hazing, the carnival, our show The Heaf Is On), supple- mented by the getting-to-know-you doings of daily living and the new change of faces which self-scheduling made possible, resulted in a feeling of warmth and familiarity. It was this characteristic of the Class of ' 60 which contributed much to the success of Interviewing Day for the Class of ' 61 and prompted Miss Vera Minkin, former college registrar, to com- ment: The help given . . . has been of immeasurable value to your college. The warm, hospitable, friendly atmosphere you have created in greeting and escorting the applicants has helped them to feel comfortable and has been the very best kind of public relations. Yes, by June 1957, we belonged— but to whom? That was to be decided in our Sophomore year, The Mobile Year, the big event of which— and indeed, we might say of the four years— was the move to Union. The transfer resulted in more than a mere physical change: the actual moving and the planning that preceded it were responsible for another change —a change in student outlook. It was this new outlook which shaped the class spirit of the Freshmen into the school spirit of the Sophomores. We took a keen interest in the school name; we developed kindly tolerance for the rocky roads, the unfurnished lounges, the bare snack bar. We were proud of this school— our school— admiring it secretly, praising it openly. It was a time of fulfillment and anticipation, of birth and growth, or perhaps more accurately of a rebirth, in love, ideals, and spirit. Junior year was The Cultural Year: dedication of the campus, when Norman Cousins delivered the main address, provided the initial impetus. This was the year that the Annual M. Ernest Towns end Memorial Lecture Series was instituted and gave us the opportunity to hear Clement Atlee, Daniel Schorr, Ogden Nash, -and Eleanor Roosevelt; this was the year that the presentation of Handel ' s Messiah was initiated as an annual event. The Collegium Musicum Chorale also made its initial appearance on campus, and the Fine Arts Film Club presented its first program of motion picture classics. The Col- lege Center Board was organized and began offering evenings of jazz, the theatre, and politics. And although their cultural merits may not be so apparent as the aforementioned activi- ties, we dare not overlook the Junior Luau and the School Carnival, both very successful events. As a fitting conclusion to the Cultural year, the Junior Prom transformed the Stu- dent Center into a World ' s Fair theme that made full use of the building ' s facilities. These activities were executed by a college family that was determined that the new name of the school, Newark State College, be not a nominal change but that it should have a basis in fact. They were attended by an audience in a dangerous situation: as science was assuming its pedestal posi- tion, there was the possibility that the humanities would be further relegated to a more inferior one; fearing this, the audi- ence felt a revival of interest in cultural activities. Thus it was that those who attended the various performances were doing so to become more aware of the cultural aspects of their new world. It is most suitable, finally, that the Senior Year can in all honesty be acclaimed The Educational Year. It was the centennial year of John Dewey ' s birth and the occasion gave rise to the very important John Dewey Centennial Celebration at Newark State. The celebration was divided into two major events. The first was an all day program featuring Dr. Harold Rugg, which provided aspiring educators with a glimpse of a truly creative man and a view of the world in which he would soon find himself. This world was displayed in greater depth by the four speakers who participated in the second major event: The John Dewey Centennial Lecture Series. There are several further memorable occasions. It was a significant event indeed when the voters of New Jersey dis- played their faith in higher education and voted yes on the College Bond Issue. In the spring we were evaluated by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. But perhaps the most important occasion because of its person- al value and vividness, was that series of events begun with student teaching and continuing through job applications and interviews, and to be ciimaxed by the signing of a teaching contract. Even this chronological list takes on shape and form for us. In addition to our career at Newark State College, it is also a part of a greater and broader history, a history of achievements and triumphs through countless ages of time— we have carved four pages in the tablets of the history of man. 76 During the years as underclassmen, the students find the main objective of their efforts is directed toward the task of INQUIRY. Their examination of their subject matter, their lives, and the world about them suddenly takes on new sharpness, importance, and vigor. Their search becomes clearly defined as education broadens their perspectives. Their investigation reaches significance of great value as truth challenges their ideas and ideals. But the greatest change occurs in the increased effort of the individual to search deeper and longer to answer this challenge of INQUIRY. 77 Ira B iii ■ i 1 ■. JOT ] 1 1 FIRST ROW: R. Through his encounter with the complexities of life he has many experiences. Student Life is an accumulation of many and varied types of experi- ences which combine to affect the individual while at the same time forming the tempo of the college. This section is devoted to presenting the pulse of student life racing through the activities and events of the college year. The significance of Student Life can not be accurately measured since its scope is extremely wide and its effect differs widely. Student Life is a mixture of people, ideas and actions v hich cause different reactions from each person. Such life causes a change of behavior to meet the varied situations. The positive and negative aspects of such social con- tact has a definite bearing upon the individual ' s philosophy of life. Thus the Academic and Student Life unite as EXPERI- ENCE, to form a great portion of the FORMULA FOR LIVING. 101  i mm f urn n We come to my parlor 1 . ' What now-Hynes? ' SENIOR COURT The Senior Court, part of Newark State ' s tradition to indoctrinate freshmen to campus life, handed down its verdicts in the form of college knowledge. Since this year was filled with interest in the November College Bond Issue, many freshmen found guilty of insubordination paid for their misdemeanors by becoming experts on the bond issue and actively campaigning for it. Other offend- ers became experts on the history of the college and spread their knowledge to promote increased understandings of our campus and its active student life. After the balloting, Miss Annette Perrone was selected to represent Newark State at the final judging before the Rutgers- Lehigh football game. ' Oh ' 105 Every bit helps! c RIMIVAL The first attempt to rejuvenate the All College Carnival, after a two year lapse, provided Newark State with the very successful production of The Old South. The Carnival committee co-ordinated the efforts of many of the clubs, organizations, frats and sororities on cam- pus to produce an extravaganza that enabled the stu- dents to reach their quota for the advertising fund for the College Bond Issue. The gym was transformed into a series of booths, and other forms of entertainment that showed great original- ity and creativity on the part of their builders. Other groups built food-serving booths that were very popular and filling. Spirit and cooperation were the most important fea- tures of the carnival and were exhibited by the students and faculty alike. 106 A ce Skinner, 1957 Carnival Queen crowns George Sisko and Fran Nat ale, King and Queen of 1959 Carnival. The cafeteria became the International Ballroom, the Snack Bar turned into a German Beer Garden, the Little Theater was a hanging Japanese Garden, the lobby was trans- formed into a Paris Cafe and the Recreation Room became a Spanish Fiesta. After the guests ate their dinner in one of the different dining rooms, they adjourned to the International Ballroom to dance to the music of the Ray Masters Orchestra. Texas was never like this! The Chorus, directed by Jack Piatt, is perhaps one of the most witnessed and welcomed groups on campus. Their performances are featured at all college assemblies, Little Theater recitals and programs for the public, on and off campus. Through the director ' s efforts, guest artists are also brought in to provide well-rounded enter- tainment. The Chorus waits for Mr. Piatt ' s cue. The main purpose of the building is to provide a meeting and gathering place for students and faculty. The atmosphere generated within its walls sets the spirit of the college. The direc- tion man shall take is closely related to his attitude. To be able to get along with individuals on the basis of a person-to-person relationship or as a member of a group requires a reorganizing and adjusting of attitudes. More and more the organization of individual talents and personalities to unite for singular purposes is becom- ing a prime reality. The extent of man ' s ability to organize is based upon his understanding and ability to adjust constructively and rebuild ORGANIZATIONAL patterns to solve his problems. The experience represented in this section deals with the student ' s organized efforts to work together to solve and participate in the solution of common problems. Through such ventures, organization gives each individual a part of his set of values to apply to the FORMULA FOR LIVING. 115 QOVERIMMEIMT Progress and perception . . . these might very well be the year ' s theme of the Student Government. A year of tying up former loose ends, taking things in hand, giv- ing direction to organizations within its structure and striv- ing to create a truly collegiate atmosphere through level- headed student leadership. The Student Council had a set of very ambitious plans for the year which included setting up committees to: revitalize the leadership training program; establish criteria for a Student Council Scholarship program; run the annual carnival; seek a new alma mater; look into the possibility of foreign students on campus; investigate the parking situation; allocate funds to needy and worthy functions; al- ways keeping an eye toward the future. The Board is composed of six stu- dent members and six faculty members who are responsible for the policy and programming of the College Center. The most impressive contribution of the College Center Board was the co-sponsorship of the big name attraction, The Hi-Lows , for the All-College Carnival for 1960. Their programming included the performances of the Barbara Troxwell recital, the Tulsa University Chorus, the Chamber Music Concert, the Judy Speck recital, the Dickinson Col- lege Choir and the second Turkish Night. The students have also enjoyed other College Center sponsored events such as the many art exhibits in the lobby and halls of the College Center, the record library and the stereo equip- ment installed in the Recreation Room, and the Friday Night Frolics which have been financed and guided by the Board. The work of this committee has enabled our College Center to assume stature as a maturing and im- portant Student Union. LEFT TO RIGHT: R. Smithouser, J. Minskoff, B. A. Metz, D. Pecina, F. As our college grows in population and scope, the in- fluence of the college paper increases. During this period of development the REFLECTOR has kept the spirit of protest alive on many fronts. As the editorial policies of the paper go through the stages of growing pains, the freedoms of the American democracy are on trial. The REFLECTOR of 1960 has taken a major step toward becoming a full- fledged college newspaper. The MEMORABILIA is a verbal and pic- torial passage of his memory which enables him to view his years at Newark State College and gaze upon his personal college career in its completeness. The staff of the MEMORABILIA annually pre- sents the student activities, events and experiences which comprize the academic year. Through the medium of words, photos and art work the student has a permanent remembrance of his college days and its many component parts. CARL M. In addition to the pleasant memories that will linger on long after college days have terminated, the brothers and sisters of the FRATERNAL organi- zations will continue to enjoy the friendships cultivated within the organizations. The unity formed by fraternities and sorori- ties through their various social and charitable projects, as well as the gains made in understanding interpersonal rela- tions are all an integral part in the growth of this section of the student body. The problems encountered, the problems discussed, the problems solved— all these are factors which stimulate many students to become active participants in their communities. If one word were chosen to describe sorority-fraternity life, that word would be fellowship. The growth of an individual independence and interdependence is in a large measure de- rived from membership in a fraternity or sorority in Newark State College. 128 I. F. S. C. The Inter-Fraternity-Sorority Coun- cil of Newark State College is the core or nucleus around which the Greek organizations revolve. Composed of representatives of each fraternity and sorority, the Council strives to promote fellowship and harmony between the groups, to solve problems concerning inter-relations between fraternities and sororities and to effectuate harmonious relationships within the individual or- gani zations. Aside from the annual all- college dance which is sponsored by the I.F.S.C, and the scholarship which they award annually, the Council acts as a mediation board between the fra- ternities and sororities and the college administration. Besides the high lights presented in this annual, the students also remember the various art exhibits staged in the lobby of the College Center, the diversity of visitors and guest lecturers to the various courses conducted on campus, the rich and varied background of our resident and exten- sion faculty, the talents and creativity of our classmates, and the rich benefits of life in a free democracy all blending to form an important and lasting cultural heritage which gains importance as his FORMULA FOR LIVING develops. 133 COLLEGE FO The rapidity with which the political, diplomatic and social relations among countries change today has made the studies of this club increasingly valu- able. The aim of the club is to help its members and the student body at large keep abreast of state, national and international affairs and increase their understanding of world happen- ings. Through lectures and discussions by guest speakers, faculty and stu- dents, this aim is accomplished. In keeping with the broad aims of the club, this year has seen such prom- inent personalities on campus as Stringellow Barr, John Roy Carlson and Norman Thomas. Other discussions revolved around eyewitness reports from American students who had travelled in troubled spots of the world. SEATED: B. Povlak, N. Brown, R. Smith, R. Tansey. STANDING: A. MRS. JANE PLENTY Service can ' t be accurately measure d in feet or inches. Time and performance are perhaps the most accepted methods of judging service. Mrs. Jane Plenty is a symbol of diligent and dedicated service to Newark State College. The many activities of Mrs. Plenty point out her admirable qualities. Arriving in September, 1920, Mrs. Plenty, a graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, has held many posi- tions and responsibilities. She has served the Mathematics De- partment as an instructor and headed the Department from 1949 until her retirement from the faculty in 1953. However, she has continued to serve the college as Manager of the College Book Store, a position she has held for many years. Her professional contributions include: serving on a State Committee in the prepa- ration of a teaching manual on arithmetic for grade teachers; preparing and revising college courses of study; and working on a State Committee on grade location of course of study materials for elementary schools. In addition, she is both a member of the Teachers College, Columbia University chapter of Kappa Delta Phi and the Newark State chapter. The list of professional qualities and contributions listed do not tell the complete story. With 40 years of service, she has other traits of performance that have made her a symbol of faith- ful service. Her lasting faith in the dignity of the individual has enabled her to turn the book store responsibilities over to the students with complete confidence. Her ties with the Alumni and friends of the College are strong and true. Mrs. Plenty ' s vitality for life has demonstrated that she has truly found the FORMULA FOR LIVING. With the beginning of classes, the Book Store is the center of action. 164 SECRETARIAL STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Cato, I. Boyd, S. Weeks, B. Martin, E. Delia Serra, P. Tucker, A. O Kane, G. April, M.
