EUGENE G. WILKINS President B.A., North Texas State College, M.A. and Ph.D., Columbia University. To the Class of 1959: You have the honor of being the first graduating class to bear the title on your diplomas of the new name of the college, Newark State College. Although this change of name does not immediately affect the pur- pose and the program of the college, because for many years to come the education of teachers will be its chief function, it is signifi- cant that you are the first to bear the name of a college with great potentialities. In the years to come let us hope that you and the ones that follow you with this new legend on their diplomas will pursue careers in the field of education which will reflect honor to the college and bring outstanding ac- claim to you as members of a great profes- sion. May you never forget the motto of the col- lege, Who Dares To Teach Must Never Cease To Learn. The four years you have been with us should start you on your life road to learn- ing, not always in a formal situation, but con- stantly with personal growth and self reliza- tion as the core of the process. Along with words of God speed and best wishes for your success in the years to come goes a wistful note of nostalgia that you do not forget the college, that you will come back to become a part of the long line of graduates extending well over a hundred years, for though the college may live on the impetus given it by the current flow of students, honor, affection and prestige come to most colleges through continued concern and accomplish- ments of those who have passed through its classrooms and meeting places. May you take your places of high respon- sibility and fulfill the responsibility so well that honor will inevitably follow. Sincerely yours, Eugene G. Wilkins President I4 a
