The child W7110 holds his freckled face in dirty hands And listens to you tell Of decimals and songs and foreign lands Will learn to love his country well And how to count and spell. But then, When he has proven you and he are friends, Heill quietly come to you With stories of his own as dividends For your long hours Willi the fifth grade zoo. And then a world will open wide for two. You9ll learn Of his collection of volcanic stones And of his favorite kite. Youall see his precious fossil bones And where, sky high, Orion sits at night. Then, with his eyes. youill find for- gotten sight. Heill go But every year you'll be returning To be calmly caught In your sludentis gentle web of learning. RICHARDSON Class Adviser 57 OUR HISTGBY Freshman, in 1952, was hug-eyed and floppy- eared. He couldn't quite absorb all the college atmosphere he saw. Hours on end were spent in the librarv, reading The Function and Pur- pose of the Castro-Inteslinal Svstem. Freshman grew a vocabulary of smart college phrases, and even sang the Alma Mater when he didift have to. He carried his mauled Freshman hat re- spectfully in grubby hands when he talked to upperclassmen during hazing. However, he re- ceived 200 demerits anyway for ttunconscious insuhordinationf, Wind listens to you tell. . . WThen Class President Jack Citarelli was elected, Freshman told everybody, Lil voted for him, too? Everybody marvelled at how average Freshman was. On the class7s field trip to Island Beach, Freshman was one of four who got lost in the marshes and kept the entire class an hour off schedule. But the class just shrugged collective shoulders and smiled. wlihatys Freshman? they said. In 1953, Sophomore was haggard, rushed, baggy-eyed, and sleepless. It seemed to Sopho- more that term papers, tests, reports, and proj- ects would never end. Now he spent more money and time on coffee at Scottyas, coni- plaining about the work he would be doing on into the night. Sophomore became bitter about life when his one experiment on the lever and pulley never worked out in Physics. But things smoothed out some in the second semester, when he proved to be a wizard with light and sound. Determined to prove what a man-of-the world he was, Sophomore joined the class show this year. The theme was HGolden Apple? Sophomore played third worm from the left. Betty Harris was elected President this year. About Betty, Sophomore said, H'Nice girl. But how does she find the time?,i Though he spent less time in the library in those days. he was still thrown out quite often for arguing the sociological implications of Moby Dick too loudly. Sophomore went to Totowa and came back an idealistedetermined to make a crusader and a pioneer, or at least a patient and understand- inf;r teacher, of himself. W'henever he got that far-away, tortured gaze in his eye, his class- mates would say, isQuo vadis, Sophomorefw 1954 saw Junior a cultured, intelligent, argu- mentative individual, steeped in tradition, psy- chology, and child development. He wore char- coals, bermudas, and white bucks quite dirty. He was informed on politics and international relations, expert on the Hutophone and auto- harp. Junior took life in his stride, a happy-go- lucky, carefree efficiency expert, dabbling in papier mache and clay. Practicum gave purpose to the preceding 2V2 years of Classes, tErnl papers, and education courses. He felt the honor and dignity of his profession and determined to do even better next year. Junior never got to the library. He was very busy with the class show, iiCinderellaf in which he played a pumpkin. However, he carried paper-bound copies of New Jersey Budget and Not As a Stranger everywhere he went. Junior was part of the first class to welcome Douglass juniors to Newark State, and he found many friends in their midst. He was surprised to learn that students are basically alike, no matter what college they may be from. When Cathy Stubits was elected Class Presi- dent, Junior said, uCapable girl; sheill find the job a cinch. How blase. This year Junior was busy with clubs and committees, meetings and teas, and a strong sense of responsibility was developing. VVhen- ever his friends caught a glimpse of him rush- ing by, they would say, iiThere goes Junior again? A most well-adjusted person was Senior, who had found his spot in life and looked forward confidently t0 the future. He considered him- self more of a deep thinker than ever before -an expert on American institutions and phi- losophy. Senior was a leader, yet he accepted the responsibility with not just personal pride, but also with a sense of duty. When notified of the election of Ruth Burns to the office of Class President, he said, iiExcellent choice. If she needs any help, 1511 be right herefl Senior visited the library once in a while to pick up a book or two. He often could be found on the dark back stairs, reading a copy of Rudolph Flesclfs Why Johnny Canit Read and IVhat You Can Do About It, which he quickly hid behind his Crossnickel whenever anyone walked by. It wasnlt that the faculty objected to his reading it; but, you see, he had paid for his copy. Come January, Senior went, stalwart, out to Practicum, armed to the teeth with curriculum revisions, visual aids, and activities, planning to make this year better than ever. The Fresh- men and Sophomores were sad to see him go. Senior complained less and smoked more and went to more parties and weddings and showers. In his private coffee groups he talked more about college policy, club work, teaching, Stu- dent Council, sorority questionnaires, and place- ment, than he ever had before. He was closer to his instructors now and more independent in thought. iiXVho dares to teach must never cease to learnfi He groaned at the cliche his motto had become in four years. Yet, he believed violently in the meaning of those words and was not ashamed of the idealist he had grown to be. And when he told his friends what he meant by the Equality of Man, they would watch him with great pride and answer, iiWeire with you all the way.,9 This is the class of 1956-marked with a stout and stubborn pride-pride in their col- lege, their country, and their profession. They have been blessed with an unshakable belief in the inherent worth of all children, the dig- nity of man, and a faith in God. 59 You lI learn - - 3, ' 60 JLNIOR 1 Left to right ROW' 1-H.
