FOREWGRD We are proud to obtain our positions in the various school systems and classrooms .in which we can do our utmost to teach to the best of our abilities. Through our guid- ance, we hope to help the children we teach along the paths toward fullest possible develop- ment, giving them kindness and understanding. Psychology and other professional courses gave us the realization that each child develops at his own individual rate, physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. Our college professors have pre- sented many philosophies and educational theories which we will make realistic in the situations which will confront us. We are grateful to this college for the fine beginning we have had for our profession and are now ready to prove ourselves worthy of the responsibilities for which we are prepared. As we glance back at our college careers, few of us will forget what is written at the college entrance: Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. W The 1953 Memorabilia wishes every senior success and happiness, and we hope that this book will recall many wonderful experiences at N.S.T.C. DEDICATIUN We, the class of 1953, are proud to dedicate this yearbook to our able friend and instructor, Mrs. Jane Plenty. All who come in contact with her realize and appreciate her alert mind and genuine affection for people. Her individual ideas and educational philosophy have helped us to consider the children we will teach as individuals, needing our kindness and under- standing as well as our guidance. Since September, 1921, Mrs. Plenty has instructed stu- dents in mathematical procedures in the elementary school. She came to our college with a degree from Teachers College, Columbia University and with several years of teaching experi- ence. Among her professional contributions are: Representing Newark State Normal on a State Committee in preparing a teaching manual in arithmetic for grade teachers, preparing and revising college courses of study, and working with a State Committee on grade location of course of study materials in arithmetic for the elementary schools. Since 1949, Mrs. Plenty has been the head of the Mathematics Department of our college. In addition, she belongs to the Teachers College, Columbia University chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, and has always been a loyal member of the Newark Chapter of this honorary society. The faculty and members of Kappa Delta Pi will remember the annual picnics given at her home. Mrs. Plenty has conscientiously managed the college book store for a number of years and has served the students unselfishly, giving generously of her time and efforts. Her belief in people has resulted in turning over book store responsibilities to students without hesitation. Mrs. Plenty is respected by all who know her and the class of 1953 will always remember her outstanding personality and numerous professional and social contributions to Newark State Teachers College. 4-'myaw 'fn 51,5 -I 'I X Q, ' 1-cf , ' 4375: I 1, fff- . -' 7- 1! Greeted with both friendship and understanding by faculty mem- bers and students, we soon felt quite at home in the college. After our first case of registration writer's cramp we felt like old college students. With fearful steps we started for our first class, vowing not to ask directions. As we received our book assignments, we proceeded to the bookstore where we found long lines and much confusion among the students. But the bookstore was nothing compared to the lunch room. Per- haps it's iust the beginning of the semester we thought - but alas, it was like that for four years. Yes, we were freshmen. We went through hazing, with pillow cases and wardens. We also became experts on myopia and the social group. But most of all we knew our scales. As Sophomores we really worked hard. Those long dis- cussions about business finance, speech and the handicapped child were interesting and very valuable. Remember Agamem- non and Raskolnikov? They filled many waking hours. We learned many things - how to play bridge, the waitresses' names in Scotty's, how to trot like horses and which chairs were most comfortable in the Tudor Room. As Juniors, we received our first practicum assignments. We were ambitious, eager, and a little frightened. Then there was the bond issue in which we all had a part. lt gave us prac- tical experience in New Jersey Government. We also became walking iewelry shops with our class, engagement and wed- ding rings Between social affairs, the prom, Scotty's and bridge we did learn all about mental block and the reiected child. As Seniors, we looked forward to practicum, the show, proms, picnics, senior week and graduation. Busy, yes, but we had political debates and many of us voted for the first time. We learned more psychology and philosophy as our months in the college were drawing to a close. We will always remem- ber the educational and social experiences we had at Newark State Teachers College. - f X ClASS UFFICERS S fzif - .Up -,fx V'-itirv-- X , Xa T? -x SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: J. The Executive Committee is made up of the otticers of the Student Organization and the Class Presidents. The func- tion of this committee is to review and condense all problems that are to be presented to the Student Council. 'The council is a strong link between students and faculty. It is a good ex- ample of democracy at work at Newark State. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE STUDENT COUNCIL Every student in the college is a member of this organiza- tion, the governing body being the Student Council. Each section elects a delegate to represent them at the Council meetings. The Council's work is to maintain harmony and co- operative relations between students and faculty. It appro- priates funds to various college organizations, appoints com- mittees to work for the welfare of the school, and continuously works to solve any college problems that may arise. The Social Committee helps to fill this need by planning various social functions including the All-College Dances, the Brother and Sister Tea, the Christmas Party, the Junior Tea and the Tea for the Cooperating Teachers. Students in this way have the opportunity of working together toward a common goal-Henioyment for all! SUCIAL CUMMITTEE HUUSE CUMMITTEE This committee initiates and stimulates in the student body, activities which are essential or advantageous to de- veloping the physical attractiveness, neatness, and the general good will of the college. The members' duties include care of student mail and supervision of bulletin boards. A special concern is coping with the crowded conditions of the cafeteria and Tudor Room. Do you remember Mr. Downes' program Author Meets the Critics right before the Presidential election? We were ready to leave on the next boat for Hawaii after Richard Bott's illustrated lecture. Dr. Wilkins' Thanksgiving message was one we will remember for a long time. Hansel and GreteI put us all in the Christmas spirit. We will also remember the club parade, class shows, and other programs from organizations within the college. Yes, you say. I remember, for the assembly programs were an important part of my college days! All. CLUBS MEMORABILIA , The staff of the 1953 Memorabilia consisted of upper- classmen whose combined efforts have striven to bring all the students a book of which they will be proud. From September to December, the staff has been scheduling senior pictures and club pictures, working on the layout, getting club histories, and attending to all thc minute details involved. The officers have been able directors and very cooperative workers and they are grateful to the volunteers who have carried out their as- signments. Through our theme of psychology, we have endeavored to bring light on our attitudes and purposes in teaching young children. We sincerely hope that this yearbook will be a memorable one for you. ?
