Parents have awalc- ened to the lcnowledge of what they can and should expect of today's schools. The teaching profession must fulfill these expectations hy sup- plying educators well-trained in the ways of guid- ing children. Providing these teachers is the worlc of such institutions as New Jersey State Teachers Col- lege at Newarlc. ln line with contemporary edu- cational trends, the new curriculum emphasizes general education throughout the four years. In addition, the program provides for training neces- sary lor certification in live curriculum areas- Kindergarten-Primary, General Elementary, Fine Arts, Industrial Arts, and Curriculum lor Teach- ers ol Handicapped Children. 1 X FUHEWUHU -'R -, ., .A 4-ov ':1l'5 J w'.-Nr -lr v ,Iv-45 . 57' 3 'Y . 5 ,i 3 , , , ? Through slide lectures, sound movies, and photograph collections, the camera has afforded school children the opportunity ol receiving visual aid and instruction. lnlormation which is gained through hoolis or discussions, when supplemented with a movie or slide tallt, he- comes clariliecl in the childs mind, thus enahling him to learn more quiclily and interestingly. The Camera Clula ol our college is interested in the technical and artistic lcnowleclge hehind this visual education. Picture-talting, developing, printing, and enlarging are all included in its activities. hlany memlaers ol the cluh are satisfied when they have hecome reasonahly prolicient in the simple operations ol taliing the pictures, while others leel that this is only the starting point, and go on to pursue more advanced worli, These memlyers, having mastered the technical operations ol the camera and photographic equipment, strive to ohtain in their xvorli those qualities necessary lor maliing a picture artistic. This seelxing ol an artistic quality in photographic worlc is one ol the aims ol the cluh and it is the memhers' belief that in this phase lie the true pleasures ol photography. The Camera Clula considers active participation in group xvorlt im- portant. Field trips, social parties, exhihits, and lectures all help to stimu- late the interest and cooperation ol its memlmers, Special mention should he made ol this year's largest and most challenging project, the lyuilding and furnishing ol a new and complete darlt-room. An old shower room was transformed into a fully equipped photographic lalaoratoiy. This is an example ol a project which can lime executed hy a group ol cooperative and industrious students. .if-. 6-v w? . ,I v,f,,1',,- EAMEHA CL B nrsr row: Mr. ixams 1.-xrlvlseri, ir. isrown, rv. mam, J, Lairns CVice-Presirlentlg second row: H. UHEHESTP1 This year we have had the pieasure of hearing the music of the coiiege orchestra at numerous assemhiies as weii as at the Thanicsgiving and Commencement programs. This very ahie and active group, under the direction oi ivir. John 0. Gerrish, has done much to encourage the iove of good music among ciuh mem- iaers and throughout the student hody. The orchestra memhers not only are growing themselves through experience with their instruments hut are heiping to broaden the interests of the student body. These interests tend more and more to include music, an appreciation of which is fundamental to any weii-rounded individual. As teachers, particuiariy, we wiii need a genuine understand- ing of this art if we are to answer the demands of children whose iove of music must he encouraged and whose musicai ahiiity must he strengthened. By sharing its music with us the orchestra has made our coiiege iite tuiier and more enjoyahie. We iooi4 forward to many more happy piaying and listening hours. Lively pro- grams, which help to widen the students' interests, are presented at the regular meetings. The open-mindedness and the intellec- tual curiosity that this group encourages are essential to one who plans to teach others. The attitude of the Club typities the willingness to be ever learning that is inherent in all who lieep abreast ol the times. Field trips, which show science in its everyday use, and parties, which enable members to lcnow each other better, are part of the club's active program. Also on the year's schedule was a meeting with science enthusiasts from other schools at the Rutgers College ot Pharmacy. The Fraternal Or- ganizations ol this college do much to- ward furthering such versatility through initiations, banquets, and informal get- togethers. Foremost among our organizations is Delta Rho Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an Honor Society in Education. Mem- bers, elected on the laasis of high scholas- tic achievement and fine character, have proved themselves devoted to the aims of democratic education, Through a varied program of social and educational activi- ties the society strives to unite its memhers in firm friendships, worlcing together to- ward their high goal. This year's activities included the fall reception of new members and the intia- tion laanquet. At the banquet lwliss Charlotte Loclcwood related her experi- ences in Norway, Holland, and England as a memher of an educational exchange group. Other informative addresses high- lighted the meetings throughout the year. The annual picnic at Mrs. Plenty's home was a source of much fun for all. Dr. Martha Downs, adviser of the group, and Evelyn Dougherty, president, saw to it that the meetings were both instructive and entertaining. '89 I, ' - Z- fm. Secretaryl, Y. It provides for the correlation ot the principles we have learned with actual classroom observation and participation. The practicum period begins with a series ot visits to observa- tion centers and ends with a two-months' practice period at one of these. For many ot us this experience gives us our tirst opportunity to visit an elementary school since our own school days. Xve are otten pleasantly amazed at the changes we find. At any rate, from the time we l-irst cross the threshold ot,the observation classroom, our role changes from that ot student to that ot student- teacher. Our courses suddenly talce on new meaning tor we see them in use. XVe return with a concrete idea ot what is expected ot us and what we must learn hetore we again step into classrooms as accepted members ot the teaching pro- tession. l I 5 5 r. Somehow, though, we emerged from this lowly existence and found that we really belonged, VVe, too, could then be seen strolling about the sunlcen garden, relax- ing in the Tudor Room, or enjoying a leisurely luncheon. Vve also went to classes that year. Dr. French's history classes were unforgettable--his holiday spirit, mandolin playing, and cigars. How we loved sharing in his secret organization, SPUTLS, Society lor the Prevention of 'l-alcing l.ile Seriouslylu The loss ol those who never lcnew Dr. French has been even greater than ours. The Freshman Assembly. term papers, and ex- aminations lxept us busy and the weelcs seemed to glide by. Suddenly we were Freshmen no longerl VVe began our Sophomore year with a hope- lul lightheartedness. The Allies had won the war and we were again at peace. The new Freshmen added to our glee, as they modeled bathing caps and obligingly did our odd jobs. Vvhen not worlcing in the library or playing Tudor Room bridge we could be found doing international dances with Nlrs, Dan, pondering sociological problems with Nlr. nHutch, or ex- pediting mathematics with Mrs. Plenty's slide rule. We also discovered or- ganismic age, the philosophy of Dewey, weaving on a tongue-depressor loom, lumarith slides, and adding by endings. Our official send-oft was the Junior Formal, held on a night when the snow really swirled. Ear mullts and lcnee warmers were the mode and they added to the fun. Spring came and we returned to our Hstudentn roles. The faculty was understanding and listened at length to our anecdotes and observations. We had replaced theory with practice. We had taught!
