I,IIA'II1, CIIIII -I I I 4 Message to the Class of 1939 Four years ago when a group of students were searching for the pro fession they had chosen, they came to a door above which was written, Who dares to teach must never cease to learn, This challenged them and filled them with so much enthusiasm that they entered. Here they met a believer in students of their chosen profession, who kindly and understande ingly welcomed them. This believer passed them on to one of his associates, who by means of an oral interview sifted and selected those best fitted for their profession. Some were left by the wayside while the others were subf jected to another selecting process. One whole day was set aside for this next ordeal. C-radually, after a few more processes of this nature, a highly selected group was summoned to begin its Freshman studies in the fall. They walked with more ease, and thought, surely, that they would be together for four years. But no! Came the first term and some more were left by the wayside. Along came the second term and a few more bid farewell. And so for the next four years did the selecting go on until a day in june in l939, when those remaining had the sheepskin bestowed upon them. But our selecting does not end here, Seniors, it continues on through life. Not all of us will teach. Some will choose other professions and occu- pations, for various reasons. Some of us may choose to further our studies before we put into practice the ideas we have developed. Nevertheless. whatever road of life we will follow from here, we can be assured of being prepared. During our stay here at New jersey State Teachers College at Newark we have been offered a well-rounded education to develop our- selves rnentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. As each of us departs along his way, may the memories and knowledge gained at our Alma Mater ever guide us. Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. Seniors, keep this challenge ever before you and you will live a life worth living. Tl-lELlVlA SWENSON, Class President. Page 53 Alianello, Mary, East Rutherford Lesher, Loretta, Morristown Page 54 Part-Time and Extension Division The Part-Time and Extension Division has had, since its inception in l929, the objective of educational service for teachers-in-service and non- professionals interested in education in the northern New jersey area. While emphasis has been placed on the offering of courses leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Kindergarten-Primary education, General-Elementary education, Fine Arts, Industrial Arts, and various types of state certifica- tions, an increasing number of students are enrolled in this division for courses not leading necessarily to the degree, but affording the teacher opportunity for professional and personal growth. The college is happy this current year to confer the degree of Bachelor of Science on students in this important division of the college. MISS Clam Lev Cummins, Peggy Davis, Dorothy Dubrovvsky, Rhoda Ellis, Miriam Kazin, Selma Linderibaum, Pearl Wishna, Frieda ali Elilili Q lo JEIEIE Eli PRESS CLUB During the past two Years the publications of our college have passed through a series of major and minor changes. lt was in the fall of i937 that the old Publications Committee was disbanded and the Press Club organized to facilitate management and improve publications. The club organized itself into two staffs, one of which assumed respon- sibility for the Yearbook and the other for the newspaper and the freshman handbook Members chose the particular staff on which they wanted to work, Since the initiation of the Press Club, the REFLECTOR has shown a steady improvement in general quality and make-up. This is evidenced by the fact that the REFLECTOR was awarded third place in its class in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest in i937 and second in I938. The Student Organization, also recognizing the progress shown in the year l937-l938, increased the budget by one hundred and fifty dollars. a matter which enables the staff to publish a monthly paper. One of the first problems which confronted the yearbook staff was the selection of a new title, since NORM had lost its significance when Newark Normal became a State Teachers College, The name chosen was MEMORA- BILIA, meaning Things remarkable and worthy of remembrance and rec- ord. The first MEMORABILIA celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of our college and followed a formal style to indicate the dignity of the occa- sion, This year the staff has endeavored to present the college in a more informal setting, Under the present organization of the Press Club, to become editor of the REFLECTOR or MEMORABILIA one must progress from a routine worker to associate editor and thence to editor, necessitating membership in .1 particular branch of the Press Club for at least three years. The cumulative effect of seasoned and discriminating workers on the major publications of the college prophesies high standards of attainment. This can be done by means of our new Colorgraph process which eliminates the need for expensive color plates. Glance at the pictures above and compare the attention value of the illustration in color with the same subject in black and white. Yet this color reproduction was printed with the same halt- tone-no color plates were used. This method of color printing is so very reasonable in cost as to be well within the limitations of your yearbook budget. Make us prove this to you now.
