THE BLUE AND SILVER FC RCC This could hut have happened once 'l'o miss it now is to lose it forever. lt is a pleasure for me to write a few lilies as an introduction to tlu- tirst Year llook ever issued hy a graduating class since tlu- organization ot' tlu- State Normal School at Newark. It is a puhlicatiou mirroring tlu- lite of tlu- school in a pleasing,1', ctimprehensive way touching upon the human side as well as those definite aims which are necessary for tlu- success of any school. .X young man asked Chauncey Nl. llepew what was the secret of success. Ile answered, Hy hoy, there is tio secret to it. lt is just dig, dig, dig. 'lhis advice has lu-en followed hy tlu- nu-inlu-rs of tlu- Senior class who haye worked and worked. thereby carrying out to a successful termination an undertaking requiring courage. hope, liiusiiu-ss ahility and unfailing faith in tlu-ir purpose. 'l'lu- discsnuragenients that lu-set their pathway in the hegiiiuiug' simply lu-came a stimulus to greater effort, and l feel assured that those sharing in tlu- respousihility ol' preparing the Year llook who have given so generously of their time and ahility have dis- covered a great truth, namely, that persistent, intelligent, co-operative elitort for the accomplishment of a worthy purpose results in a keen sense uf satisfaction and pleasure. Some people think that you can drop tlu- tireek alphalu-t upon the lloor aud expect to pick up tlu- llliad in an orderly fashion. The hasic principle iii achieving success is work, tliougght, more work and more tliouglit. l.it'e means action, and doing' something worth while and is hound up in the old saying, XYhatever thy hand tiudeth to do, do it with all thy might. When 'l'lu-mistocles was laughed at hy some persons ol' greater accomplish- meuts and gentler hreediug, he answered, says l'lutarch, lt is true l never learned to time gt harp or play upon the lute hut l know how to raise a small, incousiderahle city into glory and greatness. The Senior class of tlu- State Normal School of Newark has added considerahle glory to the fauu- of its school hy giving' us this attractive Year llook which, like the sunlight shining through catlu-dral windows, will retlect the lu-st interest ol' the school through years to come. .X couceited. ignorant. wealthy person once said to llorace tireelev. Look at me. sir, l am a selt-made maui 'lihat, sir, replied tireelev. relieves tlu- almighty of a great respoiisilvilityf' 'Iihis home-made hook, in tlu- making of which many enthusiastic, earnest students have taken part. is an expression of tlu-ir desire to leave lu-hind them a permanent memorial ol' tlu-ir loyalty, interest and enthusiasm for their Alma Mater and they can rightly assume full responsiliility for its publication. Permit me to say, -lime class of 11134, well done, my young frieiulsl You have achieved a time result! Rest assured that the same intelligent etitort will luring success in other lines of endeavor and also rest assured that tlu-re is no country so fair as ours. no land so freighted .with opportunities, no place in tlu- wide, wide world where you can make yourselves so worthy' of tree institu- tions aud lu-lp to perpetuate them. tlnioueh your patriotism, your intelligence and your virtues. tlod speed you as you go forth to represent tlu- educative value of your association with the State Normal School at Nt-wit-if.
