Through the use of the English language, one is able to express his thoughts lucidly. To further the students' knowledge of the language is the aim of the English department. Social studies, like English, is a required course in the curriculum. The social studies course assists the student to understand his surroundings and his com- munity. This year the freshman, sophomore, and junior English and social studies classes were administered under a double period schedule of core studies. It was hoped that this new program would bring a more integrated program. Orientation is especially emphasized with the fresh- men. Problems of civic lite and local governments are also learned. A foundation of the study of gram- mar, composition, speaking, spelling, and reading is given. During the sophomore year students take a look into the glorious past ot world history uncover-' ing facts that are of much interest. There's never a dull moment in those freshman social studies classes. Be it a miniature reproduction ol the island, a bamboo sign, a poster for the bulletin board or display for the library, they're always busy making something original. an W. ree.: ' 1,55 'th - t Universit of Hawaii BA 5,
