Mathematics and science play an important role in life today. They are essential in order to help build a new frontier for peace in this ever-changing world. Kauai High School's math curriculum in- cludes remedial and general math, geometry, and trigonometry, ln order to achieve a com- plete high school education, a year of math is required for every student. Academic subjects such as biology, chem- istry, physics, and radio are offered in the science program, Kauai High School's amateur radio station, KH6lK, is the only station in the territory operated by a high school. Science gives one the courage to look ahead to a prosperous future. Soy Scotty, best you shake a leg before Einstein Curammeng beats you to it . . . English ll, Social Studies Il, y , . English Ill, Social Studies Ill English is an essential and initial part of our education for everyday living. Through the use of the English language, one is able to express his thoughts lucidly. To further the students' knowledge of the language is the aim of the English department. Social studies, like English, is a required course in the curriculum. The social studies course assists the student to understand his surroundings and his com- munity. This year the freshman, sophomore, and junior English and social studies classes were administered under a double period schedule of core studies. It was hoped that this new program would bring a more integrated program. Orientation is especially emphasized with the fresh- men. Problems of civic lite and local governments are also learned. A foundation of the study of gram- mar, composition, speaking, spelling, and reading is given. During the sophomore year students take a look into the glorious past ot world history uncover-' ing facts that are of much interest. There's never a dull moment in those freshman social studies classes. Be it a miniature reproduction ol the island, a bamboo sign, a poster for the bulletin board or display for the library, they're always busy making something original. an W. ree.: ' 1,55 'th - t Universit of Hawaii BA 5, Ni J . Basketball, football, and track were sports enjoyed by the boys. ln an effort to arouse the interest of the boys, the coach gave rigid examinations, testing the ability and sports knowledge of each boy. Health instruction supplemented the cur- riculum of both classes, Lectures were given and movies were shown for better understand- ing of the subject. Metalwork, Mechanical Bookkeeping l-ll, Ill-IV Drawing, Athletic Coach Typing I The Vocational Department at Kauai High School offers a very complete range of courses in commercial, agriculture, mechanics, and home economics. In the commercial field, typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and office training are the sub- jects offered. The plan of the agricultural course is to teach boys improved methods and techniques in farming. The opportunity for talented students to do fundamental and basic work in metalwork, woodwork, and mechanical drawing with all the necessary equipment is one of the aims of the mechanical course. One of the major goals of the home eco- nomics class is to inspire the home. Home- makers are taught the problems and con- struction of clothing, good grooming, family relations, child care, and the scientific study of foods, The photography class, a new feature this year, taught the basic facts of photography and successfully constructed a dark room. A student who completes any of these courses in this wide field, is well on his way to serve his community or is prepared to at- tend advanced technical schools. v X I cf . 3,5 . b ff , . 3 X Mr. Bach Yamamoto Territorial Normal and Training School Vfoodwork Mrs. Zipporah Burns Douglas University of South Dakota A.B. RICHARD TAO artistic 00140764 Not yet thoroughly familiar with the life and routine of Kauai High, but ready and willing to learn, the sophomores began a new year of responsibilities and experience last fall. Starting the year off with a bang they chose as their class officers, president, Henry Ku- ba, vice-president, Cralina Padilla, secretary, Sumiko lha, and treasurer, Richard Tao. Biology, geometry, and typing were a part of their studies and true to traditions they earned the name Sufferin' Sophsf' They contributed outstanding scholars and athletes who put the class of '52 in the limelight. A few of those academically inclined were Lou Eckart, Yoshino Higa, Norma Shiraki, and Isamu Uenten. On the gridiron, Edward Kato, Henry Kuba, Akito Ogoshi, Simeon Agao, and Glenn Yagi- hara displayed their talents as rugged and promising athletes. Concluding the year's activities was the sophomore dance under the chairmanship of Helen Fukumoto. A little older and perhaps more cultured, the eager sophomores look forward tothe coming year. The squad this year stressed guidance instead of the arrest of offenders. Watching lunch lines, collecting lunch money, and checking for tickets and activity cards at games were other duties of this respected organization. Arrests were referred to the student court to be tried, This year, Kauai High School operated on a very modern school court system. Order, order in the court was often echoed by Chief Justice Edward Hanki. Jack Wakayama, prosecuting attorney, was fair and judicious, Capable Albert Nishihara showed wisdom as defense attorney. Minnie Tokunaga and Ccnstancia Santos worked industriously as clerks. With this proficient crew the apprehended were put to a fair trial before the jury consisting of Bar- bara Yamamoto, Stanley lsoda, David Wood, Alfredo Ragasa, and Clorinda Nagaoka. Through all its accomplishments the court had one ultimate goal-to teach students to become respon- sible American citizens. Row I, left to right: B. Kimura, E. Hiraoka, N. Fujii, H. Evidence of success was the great number of athletic talents revealed by this program. Officers chosen for the year's work werei Betty Tsukamoto, president, Lourdes Nelrnida, vice-president, Caroline Mayo, secretary- treasurer, and Florence Labrador, manager. 2046? The cream of all Kauai l-ligh's athletic talent is embodied in one group, fittingly called the Block K Club. Included among these are stand outs pulled off the gridiron, court, diamond, and cinderpaths. There is not enough that we can say about these few, who have toiled for long months and even years for the alma mater without hope of renumeration. Then there are those untiring ones, the managers, whose tasks are to provide for the needs and comfort of the players. Coming from Springfield College with the huge task of adjusting himself to an entirely different athletic system and new school, our mentor did remarkably well by guiding the Raiders to five out of eight wins and a KIF runner-up spot. Although finishing only second in the KIF, losing the crown to Waimeo's Menehunes .91- for the first time in six years, the Reds dis- played a brand of sportsmanship and courage on and off the playing field that will long be remembered. Honored for their sterling play, Harry Ya- maguchi, guard, Stanley Kaluahine, end, Ed Hanki, end, and William Texeira, halfback, capped first team positions on the KIF all- star list. moto, guard, Akita Ogoshi, tackle, Richard Doi, quarterback, Robert Watari, halfback, and Kenneth Higuchi, fullback, were put on the second team. . The Raiders made their 1949 debut under the kleigs of Honolulu Stadium versus the iejuvenated McKinley Tigers. Undoubtedly, the feature of the contest was Kauai's bril- liant stonewall defense, which held the Micks four times within the five yard line. Dick Gomard's conversion gave the city boys the 7-6 edge over Kauai. Acting as hosts to the Farrington Governors the Raiders avenged a previous defeat by up- setting the over-confident visitors 6-O. Allen Napoleon's beautiful 26 yard toss to Stan Ka- R? HARUO FUKUMOTO Center End luahine provided the game-clinching touch- down. Kauai high got off to a bang in the KIF as they handed the favored Waimea Mene- hunes o convincing 7-O defeat. The well- knit Raider passing and running attacks click- ed almost mechanically as they camped under the shadow of Waimea's goalposts for a large part of the game. A key block by Hanki opened the gates for Napoleon's five yard TD jaunt. ln what many consider the high water mark of Kauai high football for the past decade, the Raiders smashed the Kapaa Clippers 44-O, establishing a new KIF scoring record, A hard-charging Red line led by co-captain AKITO OGOSHI TSUYOSHI SASAKI Tackle Halfback fl f. Outclassed in every department the Greens yielded a six-pointer on the first play from scrimmage and yielded six more thereafter. Aspirations for an undefeated season were killed when a determined band of Menehunes pounded out a I3-6 triumph before 2,500 startled fans. Slow in starting, the Reds could not be denied in the third quarter as spark- plug Billy Texeira dashed 48 yards to the promised land. A crunching block by Al Mar- quez opened the way. Www.-3 Courage, a fighting spirit, and the deter- mination to improve may well describe the l95O edition ot Seichi Ono's Raider basket- ball team. Manned by a single veteran and eleven newcomers, the cellar-dwelling Reds were un- able to tack down a KIF conquest but stored up immeasurable playing experience for next year, when, with a squad of returnees they definitely will be a power to be reckoned' with. Hard luck plagued the Reds all winter long. Possessing the material for a champion- ship five they lacked the court know-how which can come from long seasoning. The Raiders point to a 22-I9 pre-season victory over Waimea as their big one. Sharp-shooting center Patrick Ellis, guard and captain Stanley Kaluahine, and forward Yuso Kurihara by their sterling all-around play and fine morale building were given all-star second team berths. Vlith but one more championship to go before laying permanent claim to the KIF Baseball Trophy, Coach Akio Kubota and his cohorts will do their utmost to make this the year. Sparked by an all veteran infield, the dream of any mentor, and a well seasoned outfield, the overall solidity of the Reds augers well for their chances of retaining their KIF and KAU diadems. Uncertain in only the pitching department, with three untested hurlers, Richard Doi, Howard Uyeno and James Kaneshiro, and one holdover, Miwao Kokame, the fine de-, fensive support should offset any weakness here, At the plate Billy Texeira, Bob Tamura, Haruo Fukumoto, Frank Yoshii and Pat Au- gustin will undoubtedly bang out many extra base hits.
