English IV studied units based on English literature, a compre- hensive study of the history and structure of the novel, reading and research on one English novel, and individual reading on all types of literature. English Ill studied units based on What American writers have written about? -American landscape, people, de- mocracy, values,-analysis of styles and content of American prose, poetry and drama . . . vocabulary study in con- nection with selections read . . . individual reading in many types. English II had a high point in the study of newspaper read- ing, iudging its merits, the practices in writing different types of news articles, and a visit to a large Houston news- paper. English I studied and found enioyment in the short story. Wide reading experiences were found in current magazine stories. Expression of creative ability was shown in original short story writing. Eighth and Seventh Grade found language arts a greater variety this year. This was the first year under the new coordinated English program which began with the seventh grade and went to the twelfth grade. I4
