In the background there were always important people who didn't get acknowledged. Mr. Mikulics and Ken Kaylor helped out greatly. Katella starters Mike Stieb, Matt Whieldon, Tod Lychkoff, Tim Dewald and Jeff Welshans huddled before their game against Marina. Knights triumphed in pre-season play K ,. sc- :i', L W . -cw W ,,N,eWMfw--- ' 52 if M to,t , ' -'-t,gj ' ' I., CWCNXT K Sharp-shooting guard Mike Stieb took a jump shot in pre-league action. Katella's pre-season was a disappointment compared to last year, but the hard fighting roundballers came .home with one tournament championship in their pocket and an armful of tournament wins. Marina supplied tough competition for the Knights as they edged them in two close games, one taking away the possibilities for a Marina-Westminister Championship. At Anaheim's Convention Center, Katella topped all competition with strong playing by Jeff Welsh- ans, Tournament Co-MVP, and Matt Whieldon All-Tour- nament. Also Rick Neubauer came through as he proved he could play with the upperclassmen. The final game of the C.C. Tournament proved to be a heart trembler, as Matt Whieldon's five foot desperation shot with one second showing on the clock, clinched a see-saw battle against a tough Huntington Beach team.
