Loads of expen- sive camera equipment, special camera lifts, and union movie workers. Where else but in Hollywood, right? Well, in the month of August and the first week in September, Hollywood went Midwest. Lawrence and the University of Kansas got a taste of the glamourous life when ABC Circle films came to town to shoot The Day After , a four hour made-for- television movie depicting the devasting effects of a nuclear bomb. Producer Bob Papazian and director Nicholas Meyer Qdirector of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khanj stressed that the film would not carrya political message. Its more of a personal and highly emotional movie about the effects nuclear devasta- tion would have on humanity. The first folks from Hollywood to arrive in Kansas were the casting director and his assistant. Cattle calls were conducted both in Lawrence and in Kansas City. Ai few lucky people got small roles in the film, with the chance to work with such ac- tors as Robards, Steve Guttenberb Cof the movie Diner J, JoBeth Williams C'Poltergeist J, Jeff East, William Allen Young, and John Cullum. Kansan's had to chuckle when the folks from California expressed amazement at the nor- malness' of residents. 1'They've got a lot of slick-looking people here in Kansas. Izods and all! I guess we expected the state to be in black and white, said one crew member. If the lack of farmers in bib-overalls surprised them, so did the down-home hospitality of the people of Lawrence. The crew and the actors spent most of their time filming here in Lawrence, on KU's campus, or on land close to the city. I Some of the movie's most spectacular scenes involved the use of hundreds of extras, KU theatre professor, Jack Wright and his assistants managed the recruitment of Lawrence and University people as extras in the film. In many cases, extras were paid C330 a day, usuallyj as they got to experience the joys and frustrations of movie-making first-hand. If extras were not paid, they may have received ABC caps or, most coveted of all, an ABC t-shirt. Caked in mud and grease, dressed in rags, and bathed in blood, students 11200 to be exactj filled Allen Field House on September 7th. These students were nuclear fallout victims, and had come to the field house, turned into a make-shift hospital. In perhaps the most fantastic single scene in the pic- ture, Steve Guttenberg weaved his way through the ragged, dy- ing crowd, looking for a girl he had met. As one took in the miserable mess, the filthy bodies, and the feelings of despair, you could almost , hear the silent prayers of many that a holocaust like this would never become a reality. A day shot at Tent City was even more depressing. Down by the river under the 6th Street bridge, extras moved through a bleak Hoovertown. Homes were mere boxes or sheds. On one side of the make-shift camp was the burial npit. One woman, watching the filming from the bridgeibegan to cry, thinking about all those poor people at Hiroshima. The actual content of the film is very serious, but having the Hollywood people in town was fun. And evidently, the feeling was mutual. In a thank-you letter to the people of Lawrence, Kansas, Meyer, Papazian, and the cast and crew of The Day After'? fprobably to be aired as Silence in Heaven J told of the astonishing kindness, generosity, and cooperation they had experienced here. One of the great pleasures of film making, is to go to new places, meet new people and make new friends. Seldom, however, doesthatiideal manifest itself as emphatical- ly in the flesh as it did with Lawrence. We will remember you and your kindness for the rest of our lives.
