Who would have guessed that Lawrence, Kansas would 3 new music scene so vital that it serves as a virtual musical oosisin o desert of bland pop and heavy metal? In the past four years, Lawrence has hosted bands such as XTC, The Police, Thelmtzzcocks, and Iggy Pop, KLVS student-run radio station, KJHK. has helped keep Lawrence on the map by prof gfamming more progressive rock music than any other radio station in the midwest and by actively encouraging bands to in- olude Lawrence on their tour schedules. As a result, KU students had the opportunity to see a number of the most ex- citing bands to come out of the United States in the past several years. Lawrence got a taste of LA. hardcore punk when Black Flag performed at Gftltheawall Hail during the summer semester, The band played loud and fast while lead singer Henry Rollins inserted the microphone into his mouth and snofledllyricst at the mass of hot, sweaty bodies slam dancing before him, Ulf!! tour supporting their LP Sorry Ma, I For-go: za Take ini the Trask, the Replacements from Minneapolis were very in Lawrence as were Bostorfs Mission of Burma. i Tokiloglat 366i degree tum, KJHK presented a couple of ex- pfeptbendsf The Individuals from New York played at Qfifftfteiweil Holland the Opera House bringing their brand of Jsmoattf pop to an enthusiastic Lawrence audience, The litighlightytofftheitfall of i982 was R.E.M. at the Opera House. 400 fans on a Tuesday night in fora pexformeooe surpassed by few. After opening for Elvis Costello and the Stray Cats in the summer of '82, Fools Face from Springfield, Missouri returned to Lawrence. Fools Face, predominantly influenced by 60's British and Amerioan pop, played songs from their lim two LP's Here To Observe and Tell America. Another band that never fails to draw a sizeable crowd is the Embarrassment from Wichita. The Emharrassment have a tense, rhythmic sound of their own that can turn a dance floor into a frenzied celebration of youthful energy. Four Lawrence High students have managed to secure themselves a position in the Lawrence music scene. The Mortal Micronotz play their own style of adolescent hardcore rock and roll which served as an appetizer for the Black Flag and The Replacement. Three KU alumniwho formed Get Smart in the summer of 1980 moved their base of operations from Lawrence to Chicago in December 1982. Their intense minimilistic pop thrashings have provided Lawrence many evenings of enter- tainment including countless gigs ' at Off-the!Wall Hall, Jayhawk Jam '81, and the historic Rock Against Reagan held in a loft over downtown Lawrence, Get Smart played their official farewell engagement in October, 1982 at the Opera House. The band has an LP entitled Action, Reaction. ll The music of all the bands previously mentioned can be heard on KJHK FM9l along with progressive music from around the world. KJHK will continue to support the new music scene in Lawrence and provide an alternative to the sound of AOR radio. ' V -- Ray Velasquez
