Preface The sculpture Winged Victory was first placed upon its pedastal in the Louvre before a group of men in formal dress and cloaks. It is said that when they first saw the statue, onlookers were moved to pull their cloaks more tightly around them, as if to escape the chill of a sudden rushing wind. The powerful stretch of the Victory's wings, and the wind-blown folds of its marble toga, conveyed the sensation of incessant motion and flight - a full two thousand years after the statue's carving. Like the Winged Victory, a photograph, a paragraph, can cap- ture a moment and preserve it as long as the printed page lasts. All the excitement of Homecoming, the spirit of game day, even the routine of classes, return in clarity through the photographs and words of a yearbook. Recollection adds another perspective to the events of a year. The several individual events we have experienced weld into a single, larger memory. We remember not only the individual events of 1981, but also our entire impression of the year is preserved. That is the intent of the JAYHAWKER 1981, to present the year as a whole, but also to recreate singular events. The record is not for our grandchildreng it is for us. The events are ours to remember, and with the JAYHAWKER 1981, this is a year we shall always recall.
