The rain was soft and silent and it was absurd to even think of going to class. All classes had been cut short by half an hour and it was more trouble to determine when the class would meet than it was worth to go and hear your name read from a roster. ...a deep and genuine concern for the future of all of the people of the University. It was a morning either to sleep or to read. The ambition of a few to radicalize the many does not respect a gentIeman's code of conduct. If you chose to sleep, you could awaken occa- sionally and hear the cars as they traveled on the wet streets. lf you chose to read, it was wiser not to read a textbook and not to think about college or what the new Chancellor would say. ln the broadest sense there are three major purposes of a public university... Later. it was possible to walk around the block and smell the sharp odor of the rain penetrating deeper than any summer rain could, but not as painful as the cold of winter, ...the basic data of a master plan for which we will seek the approval and support of the Board of Regents.

' :K i A M But with the later morning came also thoughts of what later year would be like: of what classes would be like, of who might be assassinated, of what bombings would be called off or resumed, of what demonstrations would be held and how they would be handled, of what girls---so close to being women---l would meet, and of how many and what kind of battles I would have to fight this year. ...To aid each student in his pursuit of maxi- mum self-fulfillment. But soon it would be time to go and listen to the new Chancellor and it was best not to think about having to walk across campus on this first gray day of classes. ...effective adaptation and optimum represen- tation continues to occur. lt was best not to think about having to go in- side the field house which l had not entered since Bob Kennedy spoke there. Free. candid. open communication is abso- lutely essential.
