We want this to be a yearbook in every sense of the word. The recording of a year at KU should not be merely the surface presentation of living groups, football games, and barn parties. We feel a yearbook should present these, but much more, on a very personal basis. Besides serving as a reference book which records a history of KU's activities for the 1967-68 school year, the fayhawker should also be a personal memory book for you, the individual. Each of us has our own individual impressions of KU in 1968. To some of us, KU is fraternities, functions, and football, and to others it's shyness, scholarship, and slide- rules. To some people, KU is long hair, love-ins, and LSD, and to others it is a simple matter of readini, writin', and Red Dog. The trick, it would appear, is to get things in the right perspective. It is to this end that the 1968 fayhawker is dedicated, and this is the theme of our book. Getting all the internal and external factors in some kind of proper perspective is a vague, and very gradual process. As the recently popular song lyric phrased it, 6'Today there is no day or night, Today there is no black or white, Today there is no wrong or right, Only shades of gray . . .W Among these shades of gray are distant but influential factors to KU students, such as Vietnam, race riots, selective service, psychedelic drugs, parental, social, and economic pressure for a good degree, and a new 656 postage stamp. perspective 68 Our generation, like every generation before us, con- siders itself unique. The difference in our case, perhaps, is that other generations often concede that we face truly unique pressures and perspectives, yet also possess higher potential than any previous generation. History, with its tendency to select the most colorful over the most representative, may regard us as the mini- skirted, non-conforming generation, who would rather make love than war. Bearing slogans, with their implied attitudes, such as Flower Power and 4'Custer Died for Your Sins,'7 perhaps our collective attitudes will one day be symbolized by a scribbling on a KU desk top, Due to a lack of interest, tomorrow will be cancelled. These are among the factors that may be influencial to the KU student in 1968, but our concern is with the yearbook and not the generation. In an attempt to bring to mind within this yearbook not only the physical aspects of KU in 1968, but also the more subtle moods, tones, and emotions you may have felt, we offer the following photographic essay. Phases of loneliness, hope, love, ambition, companion- ship, happiness, disappointment, and thoughtfulness are as much a part of KU in 1968 for each of us as the Kansas Union or the basketball games. We have attempted to present some of these moods and feelings, and we sincerely hope that the following section proves as thought-provoking for you in your consideration as it has for us in our preparation. Our goal is to present attitudes and ideas that will cause you to regard familiar aspects of KU in a new perspective .... -fohn Hill Editor
