DYER N a small college, where every student knows each faculty member, the personal relation between them is so well established that certain problems go to one faculty member and certain others to another. Where this intimate acquaint- ance prevails the relation between students and faculty may well approach the ideal. In a large University the acquaintance is manifestly more difficult, although within many departments students know and appreciate at their true worth the members of the departmental staff. Certain faculty members in strategic- posi- tions enjoy a large acquaintance throughout the campus. For the University' as a whole the Dean of Men provides a friendly ofhce where a man with genuine interest in student affairs has time to devote to them. Many times his service consists in introducing the student to another faculty member better able than he to help with a particular problem. He thus helps to establish a relationship which could have developed naturally on a smaller campus., Many other matters 'claim his time. Among them are health and housing, vocational guidance, personal counsel, campus activities, social affairs and financial aid. Primarily, his office represents an honest effort on the part of the university adminis- tration to show its genuine, friendly interest in things which concern the welfare of a rapidly growing student body. s W ,,.. Uzke-Trefzkfezzi WM. L. BURDIcK T MAY be said in general, that it is the duty of the Vice-President to assist 'the Chancellor in such administrative matters as the Chancellor may direct. This covers so many possible things that a statement in detail would not be practical. Moreover, in absence of the Chancellor, it is the duty of the Vice-Presi- dent to preside at convocations, meetings of the senate, and certain other gather- ings connected with University interest. Again, in case of other engagements of the Chancellor, the Vice-President frequently represents the University at public meetings throughout the state and elsewhere. VVhile the foregoing is not an exhaustive statement of the duties of the vice-presidential oHice, it will serve to illustrate some of the things it includes. l 1. K N I Puqf 27
