Arousing pre-season enthusiasm, varsity football coach, Vince Gibson, tells students of his We Gonna Win philosophy, and introduces squad members to the crowd at the Orientation Week watermelon feed. Challenging new students attending the President ' s Convocation, a Mortar Board member tells of oppor- tunities for service in college. All college deans were introduced during the Sunday afternoon session. 18

B.A.and B.S. candidates to the Field House to receive degrees. 1,200 receive degrees at June commencement Assembling on the field across from Anderson hall, graduation degree candidates marched four abreast to Ahearn Field House, where more than 1.200 degrees were conferred. Completing their degrees at mid-term, 628 students received diplo- mas through the mail and were invited to partici- pate in June, 1968 commencement exercises. More than 4.000 students attended the sum- mer school session which included workshops and seminars, as well as regular classes. The seminars were as diversified as the one entitled Creativity in Elementary Education. More than 60 air- conditioned classrooms accommodated the ca- sually dressed summer students. For recreation, students took Union-sponsored trips to the Star- light Theater in Kansas City, and rode the Blue River Queen, a 31-foot pontoon excursion boat. Dressed in the robes designating their individual degrees, candidates await the march across campus. 17

Sporting a new fall outfit, a fashion board member introduces campus-wear to freshmen students at a Union-sponsored fashion show. The event is one of the most popular features of Orientation Week. Parents learn of college at orientation sessions Helping parents gain a realistic outlook on col- lege life and the experiences students face, a summer parent orientation program was planned in connection with freshman pre-enrollment. In the fall, freshman orientation included special sessions on subjects chosen by freshmen , includ- ing learning and study procedures, military serv- ice obligations, budgeting and career planning. Weekly freshman seminars continued into the year and brought out problems facing the college freshman. At the annual convocation, President McCain was introduced to new students. Activities such as the Union kick-off dance and a fashion show with psychedelic music and paint- ings highlighted orientation week. Climaxing the week, the Freshman Talent Show introduced acts ranging from musical solos to comedy routines. Waiting hands accept melons and forks at the Man- hattan Chamber of Commerce watermelon feed. 19
