In his Philadelphia living room, Gary Haynes begins the task of selecting his choice for the Royal Purple Queen. News Photographe r Names Royal Court Gary Haynes was the first K-State graduate to be asked to select the Royal Purple Queen. Haynes, a ' 58 graduate, now manager of the Philadelphia News Picture Bureau of United Press International, chose Janet Lane queen of the 1962 Royal Purple. Queen Janet was crowned with a rhinestone tiara and pre- sented a bouquet of lavender and white mums. Her four attendants received identical mum bouquets. Wonderland by Night was the theme of the Royal Purple Dance at which more than 550 couples danced to the music of the Pied Pipers. Highlighting the entertainment, the nationally-known Four Preps sang at a pre-dance concert and during dance inter- mission after the queen was crowned. Speaking before new students and their parents, Presi- dent McCain elaborates on the University and its accom- plishments. Other members of the administration are introduced at Sunday afternoon convocation ceremonies. Exhibits showing the activities and structure of campus organizations and honoraries attract the eye of new stu- dents at the annual Activities Carnival.
