Orval Ebberts and Marjorie Adams relieve the work and share the problems of Dean Hahn. research at Iowa State University, was chosen to serve as head of the Department of Economics and Soci- ology. In keeping with the growing demand for greater proficiency in foreign languages, the Department of Modern Languages installed a language laboratory in Eisenhower Hall. Through the use of this elec- tronic equipment, the language laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Robert E. Pyle, gave each student an opportunity to hear the language spoken by a native as well as by himself. Anti-radiation Pills Perfected Dr. Scott Searles of the Department of Chemistry effectively perfected anti-radiation compounds, as- similated in pill form, which absorb radiation ren- dering it harmless to the human body in the event of atomic fallout. The Chemistry Department also in- vestigated the properties of electronic energy and the chemical equilibrium of humans. A S School Aids Research Programs New programs concerned with both basic research and instruction have greatly aided the School of Arts and Sciences with respect to the development of sci- entific and cultural understandings. Supporting the largest enrollment of any of the six schools, each of the 23 departments of the School of Arts and Sci- ences were actively engaged in continuous research. Dedication of the $50,000 chapel organ was a highlight of the year. Made possible by funds do- nated to the University Endowment Association, the organ contains 40 ranks and a total of 2,458 pipes. The organ was custom built to suit the acoustics of the chapel and its exposed location. Dr. Harry Helson, a foremost experimental psy- chologist, was named to the first Regents ' Professor- ship at Kansas State. Dr. Warren W. Brandt, an out- standing analytical chemist and educator, was ap- pointed head of the Department of Chemistry, while Dr. John A. Nordin, formerly the director of graduate Associate Dean Paul M. Young shares the responsibility of coordinating the Arts and Sciences program with the dean. Installed in the Danforth Chapel Auditorium November 19, Kansas State ' s $50,000 pipe organ has 2,458 pipes. 25

Basic life processes and the relationship of living organisms to their environment were studied by the faculty and students of the Department of Biological Sciences. The research program ranged from the c omposition of the single cell, its heredity, growth and reproduction, to the diseases which destroy it. Specimens which served as experimental examples to the botanists, plant pathologists, and zoologists in- cluded viruses, staphylococci, and worms, as well as samples of fungi, pollen, and wheat. Fulbright Lecturer Chosen Earle Davis, head of the Department of English, was appointed a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Adelaide in Australia. Denison Hall, homefront for the English Department, is the catch-all for homeless classes. Its one-year old lecture hall and classrooms seat not only English students but also psychology, government and mathematics students.
