An auditorium, classrooms and offices for the extension branch of the School of Agriculture are located in Um- berger Hall. A steak is trimmed and prepared as students learn to handle various cuts of meat in the Meat Selections course. for a Dairy and Poultry Science building on which construction is to begin in March of 1962. The cost of the structure, which will be located to the west of the Animal Industries building, was estimated at hitting the $1.5 million mark, when fully equipped for use. This new research building, designed for both classroom and research study, is expected to be completed by the fall of 1963. Incorporate Department of Bio-Chemistry A newly created department for the School of Agriculture, the Department of Bio-Chemistry, was headed by Dr. Howard L. Mitchell. This new de- partment was staffed by faculty from the School of Agriculture instead of the Chemistry Department of the School of Arts and Sciences. The faculty asso- ciated with the new department was one of a few in the entire University which could boast 100 per cent PhD. degrees. Dr. A. D. (Dad) Weber, former Dean of Agri- culture now on leave with an assignment as a head administrator of a Ford Foundation project in India until June 30, 1962, was selected as one of the ten outstanding Kansans in the first 100 years of Kansas history. Dean Thomas M. Hahn, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, is a noted nuclear physicist as well as admin- istrator. He directs the policies and programs for both graduate and undergraduate students in the A S School. Hahn Accepts Duties At Virginia Polytechnic Thomas M. Hahn, dean of arts and sciences, will assume new duties as President of Virginia Poly- technic Institute at the end of the academic year. Dean Hahn has been head of the largest school at K-State for three years. Developing an excellent faculty for the school and providing its members with opportunities was the main job of Hahn. Counseling many of the 3,500 students enrolled in the A S School was also his duty. Before coming to K-State, Hahn was head of the Physics Department and chairman of the nuclear engineering program at Virginia Polytechnic In- stitute. He received his education at Kentucky Uni- versity and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 2 i
