McCain Encourages Academic Progress A steady and consistent rise in the academic excel- lence of Kansas State has taken place since President James A. McCain took office 12 years ago. Under his guidance, the scholastic standards of the Univers- ity have risen in the last five years, and scholastically delinquent students have been reduced 50 per cent. The President, primarily concerned with the teach- ing, research, extension and public relations programs of the University, was chosen to serve on the National Advisory Council for the Peace Corps Program, and as a trustee of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships. His interest in the building program has added many needed classrooms and dormitories to the campus to alleviate crowded conditions caused by an expanding enrollment. Two of the newest buildings now under construction are a $2,700,000 physics- mathematics building and a $1,460,000 agriculture- science building to be completed in 1963. Governor John Anderson ' s vigorous and enlight- ened support of higher education was recognized by the University during his second year in office. Marking the annual Rig-a-Twig party held for President and Mrs. McCain, 70 organizations decorate the tree. Governor John Anderson ' s visit to Kansas State to speak to student groups presents a rare but valuable occurrence. 13
