The USS Kansas City is the third ship in a new class of replenishment vessels, and is named after the cities of Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. She is a major com- ponent of Service Group One of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The USS Kansas City was built in Quincy, Massachusetts, by the General Dynamics Corp., and was commissioned on June 6, 1970. She is homeported in Alameda, California. The USS Kansas City is designed to serve as one stop shopping for Pacific Fleet carrier and escort units, which means she can 2 provide these ships with all the necessities for carrying out operations — fuel, food, and ammunition in one stop. Because of the Kan- sas City and other replenishment ships, the task force can remain at sea indefinitely. The USS Kansas City is 659 feet long with a beam of 96 feet. Her crew consists of 405 enlisted men and 21 officers. Her maximum speed is 21 knots with a cruising speed of 15-18 knots. The crew considers her The finest AOR in the Fleet.
