These pages will show the various experiences that were encountered on the KANSAS CITY ' S fifth WESTPAC deployment. COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN THOMAS G. MOORE CAPTAINS COMMENTS We are proud to once again offer another chapter to the history of the KANSAS CITY. Like earlier chapters, it is important to remember that despite the many personal sacrifices by the KANSAS CITY family that this chapter has helped to maintain peace in our topsy-turvy world of today. Every attempt has been made to depict the activities of everybody aboard. It encompasses men at work, men relaxing, visits to foreign ports, in other words we have tried to leave out nothing. Even then the story is not complete, because we cannot depict the thoughts of each and everyone of us. Those thoughts naturally look back upon the wives, families, and sweethearts. However they are between the lines, behind the pictures, in fact, on every page between the covers even though invisible. We hope this serves as a reminder of a happy cruise and that this book is not relegated to attics or garages. May it remain in your homes to be looked upon as a pictorial part of your life. We have tried to show the teamwork, hard work, with the long hours necessary to bring a fighting ship up to it ' s peak efficiency. You can see this in many of the pictures in the following pages. I hope that those we left behind will be able to relive with us the months that we have been separated. Perhaps in that way they may begin to understand why the KANSAS CITY is proud to offer this chapter in her history. I--J3 EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMANDER ROLAND B BESSEY Commander Bessey was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, where he also obtained his Masters degree at Rutgers University. He received his commission from Officer Candidate School in November 1961. Commander Bessey ' s first sea tour was aboard the USS BEARSS (DD-654) as CIC and Comm Officer. His next assignment was in O perations and as the First lieutenant aboard the USS KANKAKEE (AO-39) Following his first sea tours, Commander Bessey served as an instructor for NROTC at Columbia University. In July 1967 he was ordered to the USS AVENGE (MSO-423) as Executive Officer. In 1968 he was given command of the USS TILLAMOOK (ATA-192) until November of 1970 when he was ordered to Buper ' s as head of the service college and post graduate school placement division until August of 1973. From September of 1973 to August 1975 he was a student at Rutgers University. Commander Bessey reported to the USS KANSAS CITY in November 1975. GIRLS LOVE HIM, CIVILIANS TOLERATE HIM, AND THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS HIM. A SAILOR IS LAZINESS WITH A DECK OF CARDS, BRAVERY WITH A TATTOO ON HIS ARM AND THE PROTECTION OF OUR LAND WITH A COPY OF PLAYBOY IN HIS HAND. HE HAS THE ENERGY OF A TURTLE, THE SLYNESS OF A FOX, AND THE SINCERITY OF A LIAR AND THE INSPIRATION OF A CASANOVA. WHEN HE WANTS SOMETHING IT IS USUALLY INDECENT, IMMORAL, OR AGAINST NAVY REGULATIONS. HIS FAVORITE PASTTIMES ARE GIRLS, FEMALES, BROADS, DAMES, -—and THOSE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. HE FULLY DESPISES ANSWERING DEAR JOHN LETTERS, NAVY CHOW, WEARING HIS UNIFORMS SUPERIOR OFFICERS AND GETTING HAIRCUTS OR GETTING UP IN THE MORNING NO OTHER HUMAN BEING CAN CRAM INTO HIS POCKET A COMB, LITTLE BLACK BOOK, PIECE OF GUM I D CARD PENS PENCILS, A PICTURE OF HIS GIRLS, A KNIFE, A PACK OF CIGARETTES AND A LIGHTER AND WHATS LEFT OF LAST MONTHS PAY. HE LIKES SPENDING MONEY ON GIRLS, POKER, AND LIQUOR: THE REST HE SPENDS FOOLISHLY.
