ER ICE TO THE FLEET The USS KANSAS CITY is the third ship in a new class of replenishment vessels, and is named after the cities of Kansas City. Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. She is a major component of Service Group One of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The USS KANSAS CITY was built in Ouincy, Massachusetts, by General Dynamics Cor- poration. Her keel was laid on April 20, 1969, she was launched 14 months later on 28 June 1970 and was commissioned on June 6, 1970. She is now homeported in Long Beach, California. The USS KANSAS CITY is designed to serve as one-stop shopping for Pacific Fleet carrier and escort units, which means she can provide these ships with all the necessities for carrying out operations-fuel, food, and ammunition, in one-stop . With the help of the USS KANSAS CITY, ships can stay at sea and on the job for indefinite lengths of time. On her cargo deck and in her fuel tanks, the USS KANSAS CITY carries ammunition, millions of gallons of fuel oil, aviation gas. and jet fuel. She is equipped with large cargo reefers and chill boxes to provide customer ships with fresh refrigerated stores. A wide variety of items are offered to alongside ships, ranging from pop- corn to movies to mail. The USS KANSAS CITY transfers her cargoes through an in- tricate system of fuel lines, conveyor belts, elevators, and twelve refueling and cargo rigs. Customer ships approach to within 150 feet of her side and cruise at about 12 knots for long periods of time while the transfer of stores and fuel is made. An unrep , as it is call- ed, is an all-hands evolution, and efficiency and swift completion are goals toward which everyone strives. AOR-1 alongside number one AOR. 4 , . The 22nd of June marked a big day in the life of the KANSAS CITY, for on that day the ship became the proud recipient of the Meritorious Unit Commen- dation-an award crowning the accomplishments and record of the K.C. on her previous deployment to WESTPAC. Commodore B. F. Bromley, formerly em- barked onthe KANSAS CITY as Commander Service Squadron Nine, made the presentation to Captain Henriques. Also flying in for the occasion was former Commanding Officer, Captain Phillip Fi. Frequently during a WESTPAC deployment, and especially after an important UNREP, one is seized with the overwhelming urge to catch forty or fifty winks, providing, of course, that a rack is readily accessible. Since this is not always the case, one must improvise. Depending on just how tired you really are at the time, almost anywhere will do-a fanroom, an office desk or even right flat on the bare deck. The task of performing these essential job orders was assigned by the Navy to SSK Ship Repair Facility in Sasebo, Japan and was expected to take three to four weeks for accomplish- ment. Perhaps the most difficult and time- consuming job was the tank cleaning. Dozens of workers, both male and female, worked day and night to prepare the ship to receive clean fuel. The large number of long black rubber hoses strewn throughout the main deck. going in and out of various tanks, gave the snip every appearance of a Satur- day night orgy on a snake farm. Nevertheless, when the job was done, the ship was better able to carry out her mission of service to the fleet it. To relieve the tensions and boredom of the 18-day long transit it was decided that a talent show was in order. Final preparations were made, volunteers were solicited, and on December 15th the show went on. EN2 Curran led off with a one-man stand-up- comedian routine followed by the music of EM3 Kintz and HTFN Ladd. Dueling Banjos by the team of HT3 Flores and ENFN Vandervier was an ap- propriate prelude for a karate exhibition by none other than FA Lugo lassisted by lCFA Spence, SA Morales, and ETN2 Jacobsonl. The Master of Ceremonies, FN Diaz, then introduced YN3 Steady Stu Gorius who soloed some Country-Western favorites. The electric guitars of ETN2 Hartley and ETR3 Austin were followed by a very candid, but hilarious interview with Captain D. N. l-lorrendous Stillwell that left the crew rolling on the cargo deck. Other participants in the show were YNSN Carrillo, and FA Schminkey. .12 .-v .W-s I . . and furthermore, there will be no more liberty until morale improves! .61 ' . - i fi , OI DIVI IGN Lug Gary More CIC Office 15 Lets see now, was it the red wire in the black hole or the green wire in the white hole? On December 7th the KANSAS CITY departed Subic Bay for the last time. The ship would not see land again until she arrived home. As was the tradition on previous cruises, two extensive customs inspections were conducted in transit. These uncovered a wide variety of exotic Oriental imports in the most out-of-the- way places. No one could seem to figure out where they might have come from, since, as is well known, sailors Best door decor do not indulge in such things. In addition to the customs inspection, a contest was held to determine which divi- sion could best prepare its doors for the Christmas Season. Top honors went to S-1 Division who was followed by S-2 and Ops respectively. ENS Driscoll won honorable mention for the profoundly hilarious contribu- tion on his stateroom door. c '9:-3-- T J ni As the ship pulled into the Long Beach breakvsater, B hearty Welcome Home! was extended by Corrmiodore W.
