-.r. . ilu. -ur. BMCMQSWJ Dobler Command Master Chief aster Chief Boatswain Mate tSurface Warfarel Robert J. Dobler was born in Sharon, Pennsyl- vania on Oct. 14, 1953. He graduated from Hickory High School in 1971 and in August 1971 attended Youngstown College of Business and professional Drafting. To avoid induction in the Army. Master Chief Dobler joined the Navy on February 2, 1972. Follow- ing basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to the Staff at Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. in April 1972. While there he was promoted from Seaman Recruit to Second Class Boatswain Mate. Master Chief Dobler transferred in December of 1982 to the USS WICHITA QAOR-ll homeported in Oakland. California. While aboard the Wicked Witch of the West, as the ship is known, the ship made one Western Pacific deployment as the support ship in search of the downed flight KAL 007, an Indian Ocean cruise, and numerous Eastern Pacific deployments which included a Central American cruise to various areas of Central America. During the tour aboard the Wicked Witch of the West Master Chief Dobler acquired his Surface Warfare designation and was promoted to Senior Chief Boatswain Mate. Leaving the WICHITA in May 1986, Master Chief Dobler reported for a tour aboard the USS KANSAS CITY QAOR-31 also homeported in Oakland, California. The K.C. immediately deployed for a North Pacific cruise to Alaska and Canada. When the Kuwaiti tankers were reflagged, the K.C. was then given a 30 day notice to deploy to the lndian Ocean!Arabian Sea as the Support ship for the Battle Group Romeo where the f1ag ship was the infamous Battleship Missouri. On her return voyage, the K.C. navigated around the continent of Australia and returned via the South Pacific. Master Chief Dobler assumed the duties as Command Master Chief of USS KALAMAZOO tAOR-61 on November 8. the 1991. ln October of 1992 the 'fKZOO. as the ship is otherwise known, deployed to the Mediterranean Sea in support of the JFK Battle Group and the MED NATO forces. . He enlisted in the Navy in December 1972 and attended basic training at the Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes. Illi- nois. After basic training he reported aboard the USS FORT SNELLING tLSD 301. home- ported in Little Creek, Virginia. Then he was assigned to the Naval Special Warfare Group TWO at Little Creek. While there. he qualified and served as Petty Ofhcer in Charge of' PBR craft assigned to River Squadron TWO. Next he was detailed for a short time with Commander Naval Base. Norfolk. Virginia and served on staff to the Admiral. His next assignment was aboard USS EL PASO tLKA 1173, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. He was assigned to Assault Craft Unit TWO, at Little Creek, Virginia. There, he qualified and served as Craftmaster of LCU 1661. He also qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist while deployed with the USS HERMIT- AGE CLSD 321. ln October 1982. he reported to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. for duty as a Recruit Company Commander. There he advanced as Chief Petty Officer. Next, he was assigned to Submarine Squadron EIGHTEEN at Charleston, South Carolina, serving as Chief Petty Officer in Charge of Craftmaster of SVC Crayfish ITWR 6821 During a subsequent tour aboard USS FAHRION tFFG 221. also at Charleston. he was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. Soon after reporting to KALAMAZOO as Assistant Navigator, Master Chief BOGON1 was selected to become the Command Master Chief in July 1994. His personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal fwith Silver Starj, combat Action Ribbon. as well as various unit. service and campaign awards. He married the former Laura Ladd of Queens. New York. They have two children: Joseph and Johanna. They reside in Upstate New York.
