How vividly we recall the loading of cargo, the last minute chipping and painting before getting underway. The muted clusters of family members and loved ones in the parking lot on that gray, overcast day, fighting back tears. The postponing of good-byes until the very last minute. Manning the rails in our Whites, and the staccato Underway! of the Boatswain Mate of the Watch. Was it only yesterday? The ports and the pit stops, the places we've seen! From the 50th Anniversary D-Day celebrations in Plymouth and Brest, to refueling and stores onloads at Augusta Bay. From an IMAV in Souda Bay that turned out to be a precursor to an IMAV in Palermo that never happened. From the quaint island of Mykonos to the leather g bazaars of Antalya and the Persian carpet merchants of Dubai. Two round trips through the Suez Canal - from the Med to the Red and back to the Med again, twice! From Rota in June to Rota in November. Was it only yesterday? The friends we made and the shipmates we miss. Captain Fahy Master Chief f BINC1O! J Dobler, Chief Shepherd, Mr. Cabrera, Chief Dollar, and Seaman Thigpen, to whose memory this cruise- book is dedicated. May this cruisebook bring back those yesterdays and more. Team Six is homeported with HC-8 at NAS Norfolk. They came to us as one detachment out of the eight that their squadron currently supports. The team was comprised of seven officers and twenty-one maintainers. Det Six flies and maintains two CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters built in 1964 by Boeing Aircraft. The primary function of the detachment throughout the MED 2-94 cruise was to provide logistic support to the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON Battle Group. This support primarily entailed the movement of passengers, mail, and cargo tPMCJ between ships and in and out of Mediterranean ports. The helicopter is capable of transferring cargo both internally and externally. With a carrying capacity of approximately 3000 lbs., the most efficient and desirable method to carry cargo is externally. attaching the cargo load to a cargo hook located on the underside of the l l' A . For six of us it was our first Mediterranean deployment, leaving Big Chief Mongo and E- Dub the only experienced EW's onboard. Fortunately, we had the benefit of going through all the work-ups, including CSA, just prior to departing so we felt ready! The training proved worthwhile as we provided EW support to KALAMAZOO in the potentially hostile waters of the Adriatic, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf. Now, we're all Old Salts with a cruise Lmder our belts, we've seen the enemy up close and personal, we've seen more sand than our U.S. east and west coasts could provide together, and we did it all in style! Now we're READY to come home! Med 2-94 has come to an end but the experiences learned and the places and people visited will live on in each of us.
