'S Accompanying USS KALAMAZGO on its six month Mediterranean deployment was Detachment Eleven from Helsuppron-Six. Det. Eleven was composed of a seventeen-man enlisted maintenance crew, seven officers and two CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters. On loan from its Norfolk-based Squadron, the helo det provided logistic support for the KZOO and the other Sixth Fleet units through vertrep operations, passenger transfers and mail delivery. In addition to moving close to 410005 passengers and 128003 tons of cargo, Det Eleven's accomplishments included the recovery of five target drones and the emergency medical evacuation of five injured sailors. The Maintenance crew performed admirably in their battle against the corrosive at-sea environment and the normal wear-and-tear of heavy flight ops. As a result Detachment Eleven was able to provide first-rate service to the fleet while accumulating over C6007 accident-free flight hours. The above definitions clearly describejall KZOO sailors. Safety conscious, Efficient, Devotion to duty and country, hard working and fun loving. These are all the qualities that a KALAMAZOO sailor must possess. Endurance: The ability to withstand hardship, adversity, or stress. USS KALAMAZOO IAOR-61 1982 Underway schedule was as follows: READEX 1-82, READEX 2-82, READEX 3-82. REFRESHER TRAINING, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Mediternean Cruise 1982-83, the BIG ONE I6 months and 199 hard UNREPS laterj, the men of KZOO are still going strong. How is that for endurance. The MED was not all hard work and no play, no we had our share of good times for example who can forget the beer busts on the piers of Augusta Bay, Sicily, or Souda Bay, Crete. How about spending Christmas and New Years eve in Paris, France, truly memorable. Remember those long and often hectic l58j straight days out at sea, talk about MOVIE MARATHONS. Athens, Greece. Two memorable and perfect weeks. Athens offered many the opportunity to view some of the great wonders of the world for virtually nothing. Chaplain Satterfield and RP2 Spivey arranged many great tours for the enjoyment of KZOO sailors. Athens, boasted a night life comparative to many large US. cities, for most of the crew it was a lot like being on vacation. Plenty of sights to see and lots of things to do plus loads of time to get involved in Athenean life style. PNSN Battle contributed greatly to the cruise book by rising to the occasion with some excellent photos of Athens, Greece. Barcelona, Spain. One of the truly great cities of the world. Barcelona, is definitely a city of magic. The men of KZOO once again had great tours arranged for them by Chaplain Satterfield and RP2 Spivey. Who can forget the very exciting Bull fights, LTJG Lamberth donated his version of the fights to our cruise book staff. RMSN Thompson and myself both had this assignment. Armed and Pesatos we set out for two days filled with Spanish excitement. KZOO had four days to enjoy Barcelona, before with cameras , embarking or Rota, Spain. The first and last stop of our MED cruise. During the past six months I have come in contact with some very talented individuals and the purpose of this dedication is to acknowledge their hard work and devotion in the making of this cruise book. k' fa book of this type usually takes a staff of some thirty good persons We accomplished the job with less than twelve The ma ing o - people. The 1982-83 Cruise book is of the same volume as previous KZOO cruise books but this book has covered virtually every phase of the ships liveliness. As you read the book you will notice some fine art work, these caricatures try to capture the spirit of shipboard lifeg as it is experienced by the KZOO sailor. They are loaded with satirical humor. Thank you MSCS LLavore and PNSN Piezschala lsee Andy, I told you it would workl. Special thinks goes out to LTJG Pearson, whom spent many a long hour in the darkroom and provided some excellent photography. SOY SK3 Howard as always came through. PN3 Cook thanks for your many contributions and the insight as to just how it's supposed to be done. There are just too many people to give thanks to atlonce but if I left anyone out everyone should know that this dedication is for everybody who contributed and participated on this MED CRUISE of 1982-83. I happen to believe that we did one great job and we had one great time doing it! Enjoy your book, because believe me one way or another you are in it.
