NEW YEARS EVE Although not an official holiday, it is one that is celebrated only once a year. Our photographer caught these crewmembers in a local Toulon bar, toasting in the New Year. Around the streets of Toulon, cars continuously honked their horns in celebra- tion.

kw The 1000 MARS call made by ENS Pearson. The biggest morale booster during the cruise was the use of the MARS Station (Military Affiliate Ra- dio Station) by most crewmembers. Over 2010 calls were made to places all over the United States out of 2350 attempts. Many stayed up till early hours of the morning to get a call through. But without the help of our MARS Operators, this could not have been done. Working in shifts, the opera- tors sacrificed many hours of sleep to make sure that a crewmember could call home. Under the leadership of LTJG Davidson, and with the help of the MARS Operators, the MARS station was a com- plete success and will continue to be a dominant part of our morale when at sea. We ' ll be home before you know it, over.
