; ' 2sffia A typical marketplace in Sekondi, where the women do all the selling. Our third stop was Sekondi, Ghana. This was our longest stay so far, lasting four days. Everyone in Ghana spoke English and our interaction with the Ghana Navy was perhaps the most fun of all the countries visited. Tours were given to a Gold Mine and an old castle. And KALAMAZOO sailors com- peted in soccer, basketball and volleyball. The Ghan- ian people were very friendly and responsive to all.

When not relaxing at the " Marine House " many crewmembers took to the streets of Dakar, to check out the local customs. Here are just some of the people that we met along the way. At left: a Senegelese woman carries a basket the traditional way ... on her head. Above: Not typical around Dakar was for someone to ask you to take their photo. However, this custom of being afraid of a camera did not stop these four boys from posing. Below: selling and trading are the mainstay of the typical Senegelese family. The majority of the pro- ducts sold and traded are fish, fruits, nuts and flour.
