The primary purpose of the Future Teachers of America Club which was chartered in 1959, was to arouse interest in those students who want to become teachers and to acquaint them with the type of work involved in teaching. The club, comprised of twenty boys and girls from grades 10-12, is affiliated with the National Education Association and the Hawaii Education- al Association. Led by President Darlene Keo- lanui and advisor, Mrs. Kim, the club partici- pated in a get-together with other Future Teach- ers of America members from other schools and attended the Leadership Conference at McKinley on December 12. MatC( o«t octeibj Membership in the National Honor Society is awarded to those students of the Junior and Senior classes who have maintained high standards in citizenship, scholarship, service and leadership. The purpose of the NHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote worthy leadership and to stim- ulate a desire to render services. Members are expected to strive for further improve- ment and to uphold the high standards of the Society. Some activities that kept NHS members busy during the year were a book sale, the State Convention, money-making projects and the publishment of a literary magazine. 32

Glenn Ahuna President Helen Sanjume Secretary Jade Park Treasurer Leo Stokoe Sgt.-at-Arms CAfiSsCW) The Chess Club, founded by Wallace Alcazar and Glenn Ahuna in March of 1963, experienced a very enjoyable year. The club, comprised of twenty-three stu- dents and adults, carried forth its pur- pose which was to stimulate interest in the game of chess and to broaden the knowledge of this game in all points and aspects. Tournaments were held between club members and faculty, and the club en- gaged in stiff competition with other schools. Jackets with the club ' s insignia. The Black Knight, were made available to Chess Club members. As a money making project, a benefit dance was sponsored. This has been a fun-filled year full of competition and excitement. Row 1.
