MatC( o«t octeibj Membership in the National Honor Society is awarded to those students of the Junior and Senior classes who have maintained high standards in citizenship, scholarship, service and leadership. The purpose of the NHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote worthy leadership and to stim- ulate a desire to render services. Members are expected to strive for further improve- ment and to uphold the high standards of the Society. Some activities that kept NHS members busy during the year were a book sale, the State Convention, money-making projects and the publishment of a literary magazine. 32

The Los Conquistadores, con- sisting of forty students, boasts its fourth successful year at Kahuku High School under the leadership of President Andrea Caneda and their advisor, Miss Saito. The club was open to Spanish students and to those who had taken the language in the post. The club emphasized proficiency in Spanish as a language course. It fostered a sense of understanding and appreciation for the language by acquainting each member with the culture of the Spanish people. The Student Body was able to witness this when the Club held their Fiesta Assem- bly in February. As the year Marionette Tejada Treasurer draws to a close, the members of the Spanish Club can happily look back on the many accom- plishments and happy times they had. Row 1. The primary purpose of the Future Teachers of America Club which was chartered in 1959, was to arouse interest in those students who want to become teachers and to acquaint them with the type of work involved in teaching. The club, comprised of twenty boys and girls from grades 10-12, is affiliated with the National Education Association and the Hawaii Education- al Association. Led by President Darlene Keo- lanui and advisor, Mrs. Kim, the club partici- pated in a get-together with other Future Teach- ers of America members from other schools and attended the Leadership Conference at McKinley on December 12.
