Along with the newness of the school itself, there were unfamiliar faces, facilities, ideas, and activities. New faces were very much a part of Serra be- cause of the situation with the Navy. New families arrived, bringing with them new students, and at the same time, an almost equal number of students moved away causing disappointment as short-lived friendships were broken up. Facilities were also new. There was the ex- pansive media center, the largest and most up-to- date in San Diego. There was the air-conditioning, the large and spacious gym, and the convenient athletic facilities. At first, not all of these were in complete working order. The media center didn't open until the end of the first semester, the air-conditioning somehow managed to cool the buildings too much, and sometimes not at all. But those problems were fixed and school operations approached normal. Activities played a major part during the first year of school. There were many days in which students had the chance to dress up in the costumes of their choice, but had to tie in with the theme for that particular day. One occasion in which there was a great deal of participation was the selection of A.S.B. officers, and many after school activities. Students and teachers had the chance, and took it, to begin the year with new ideas for the school., and to end it with memories. xi lf Li w 5 ..a 'ilk-as tilfz, -' fi . -'Al T fml, M fvnw' 'yy ff ll my T ww t?:f': '.-'I ' ' , f ew:-'Q' L as-f -' ' Student Life 1 1
