Although preserved and enhanced by pro- per care and occasional fresh coats of paint, there still re- main a few low adobe walls and rows of fragrant citrus trees, all landmarks. Judson School was founded in l928 to provide young people of diverse abilities and interests with a sound, tradi- tional education in the healthful climate of Arizona. A main goal in educating our students at the successive stages of their mental and physical maturity was to guide and assist them to become educable, self-realizing individuals in our complex society. .ludson's philosophy is bringing together young people of all races, colors and creeds from varied cultural, intellec- tual and economic backgrounds in order to engender within the school community a broad understanding, tolerance and respect for all peoples and cultures. Credit for this beautiful and smooth-functioning institution of learning must be given those countless hard working, devoted people whose faith and unselfishness has contributed so much to our inspiring present, and our unknown future. Ben Capayas and Steve Richley X T F' -4 S 3 Administration directs way I take special joy and pride in welcoming all of you to .Iudson's 50th year. Judson was founded in 1928 on what was 'then a most rugged, remote part of the West. Its philosophy was to offer sound academics, small classes, and a healthful way of life , and opened with 8 boys. When I first came to Judson in 1938, I taught every subject-math, Latin, physics, history, english-and when the bell rang, I saddled up the horses to take the boys for the daily trail ride around Camelback Moun- tain. Henry C. Wick, III, Director Weekends were spent on campus or on camping trips, riding back to school in time to crank up the ice cream machine for Sunday luncheon. The school has grown now to include girls and students from 38 states and 22 foreign countries. Our philosophy remains the same. Our students travel to many countries and states to be here. I am appreciative of the learning bridge they form between cultures and ideas that can only be known by a landis most precious resource, its children. The year has brought joys and challenges. We have resisted in- tolerance, impatience, rigidity, tunnel vision, and other flaws that could have weakened our true dedication to one another and our faith in each other. I have seen the personal growth that we have achieved through our supportive understanding of each other. My wife, Barbara, and I hope that each and every one of you will honor the sign on our front door that says: Welcome, come in! Have a wonderful birthday year! Headmaster New to Administration this year is Headmaster Dennis Gray. Starting off the year with an assembly, he made it known to us how he felt about public relations and communication, we all knew that the Administra- tion was on our side. We're working as one body for the students. Asked what he felt were the strongest points of Judson, Mr. Gray answered, We are located on fantastic Arizona countryside, for one. The solid academics are good and of good variety. Last, I feel the International aspect of it all is great. Meeting and getting to know everybody is very educational in itselff, Mr. Gray's belief in the students and his open mind has helped us make it through the year. He has made it a very educational year, scholastically and socially. Dean of Students Also new to Administration this year, but not new to Judson, is Dean of Students, Ann Karraker. Formerly Head of Girls Residence, where she aided girls in their personal lives, she now helps boys and girls in their academic lives, in which she is very pro- ficient. Asked what her goals were, Miss Karraker replied, I would like to bring the school and the students together. Tighten the communication lines. Keeping herself busy at Judson is what we all know her for. She lets the students know that they have responsibilities as well as herself. If we have problems, she's always there to help. It,s not just another job. It gave me the opportunity to work with the students, particularly. She felt that this sort of job was challenging and meaningful for her, although she says, It was hectic and tiring at times, but it still proved rewardingf' Miss O,Donoghue likes the people she's working with, including the counselors, staff, and especially the students. Itis her favorite part of her job. Asked what her main goal was for the year, she re- plied, To create a constant, happy environment and to help the girls to grow into mature women? The year was full of happiness and was good all the year round. 5 - ,Xxx ' Richard Long Richard Long was our new Head of Boys, Residence this year. With his experience in Africa and in the Peace Corps, Mr. Long did an excellent job of keeping things in order. Students are the same all over the world. They all require the same amount of time and under- standing. I found out that at Judson, the students are more cooperative than anywhere else I,ve worked. Mr. Long's goals were fulfilled this year. He wanted to create a home atmosphere and to get the staff to re- spect the students, like the students do them. I want the students to feel wanted and not lonelyf' When it came to accomplishing things for the school, Mr. Long was ifl. He worked day and night to organize and reorganize the clubs and activities on campus. Asked what he liked best about Judson, Mr. Long replied, The international mixture of all the students here is fantastic. ffice We are seldom given the chance to show our gratitude to the people behind the scene, the accounting staff and office personnel. Did you ever notice how clean the dorms, classrooms and offices have been kept this year? All credit goes to our housekeepers. If not for these fine ladies, Judson would have fallen into the clutches of the desert. In addition to their cleaning duties, the house- keepers took care of the linens and made curtains. Thanks to these ladies Judson was kept in tip-top shape throughout the year. Many thanks to maintenance men for the unbelievable amount of work done through- out the year. If not for these fine men the outside surround- ings of our school could have been turned into a total disas- ter. These well trained adults were constantly at work insuring a safe and well organized campus. These men had the thankless task of keeping students in line. Night times saw these busy men at their desk in their office or out on the campus making sure that all was well. They endeavored to keep the school under con- trol. Working 24 hours a day, patrolling and checking, left little time for their own personal interests. Thanks to these Supervisors the academic and social aspects of Judson life were well guarded and guided. Drivers provide transportation Larry Hamm, Robert Dus, Joe Kies, Paula Jobin, Wilfred Jobin and .lack Grincr. If it weren't for drivers where would the day students be? The answer is at home. Many of the day students were picked up at their homes in the morning and were dropped back home by these efficient people. As for the boarders, the drivers transported them to various shopping centers, and they even helped teachers by taking their classes on field trips. At the beginning of the year, Christmas time and the end of the year these drivers helped out by picking up and tak- ing students to the airport. Shelly Pfeider authored and delivered the speech that so aptly expressed the beliefs of and love for Henry Wick. Who is this man? Whose joys and sorrows, whose dreams have become a language spoken by others, given to them by a rare man who often had to stand alone. Who is this man who has turned his wants, his dreams, his knowledge to his and others' needs, whose pro- jections have offered deeper vision to us all. Who is this man whose thought is so commanding. No one violates his ideas when he journeys to his land of visions, where even now, other travellers are almost unknown. Who is this man who sees all of Judson as a home and yet even as he stands silently watching, he himself is playing the major part. Will anyone ever answer who is Henry Wick? We are here to show our happiness to Mr. Wick for being the person he is. 5 I . I Salutatorian Robert Stevenson Robert Stevenson was born September 23, 1960 in Peru, South America. And since I have no gold to give, And love alone must make amends, My only prayer is, while I live, God make me worthy of my friends! -Anon .lim Duke provided the class pictures and was responsible for developing the color section. Aerial photograph was taken by photographer, Larry Augsburger and pilot, Susie Augsburger. Graduates The four years of our High School will be a memory throughout the rest of our life. We look back on the happiness, the sorrow, the triumphs, the frustrations. Somehow it all seems worthwhile now. We are ready now to attempt to accomplish that which is before us. We stand today remembering the past but we look to the future, for the future is ours and we go forward today to claim our inheritance.
