MCCALEB Campus Supervision A CAREER ARMY MAN, Colonel McCaleb retired from his armor command and assumed part of the responsibilities of campus supervision here at Iudson School. His duties bring him into contact with almost every student in the school each day and the phrase Ask the Colonelv is one of the most familiar throughout the campus. In so many ways this man has made us aware that we must accept our own responsibilities. With friendship and affection, Iudson's students dedicate our 1964 Cactus to Colonel McCaleb. -3- Y w ' 1 1 I-yf Ti, . The past year has been a year of growth for us a the realization of some of our plans. New buildings have been erected, facilities have been improved, student enrollment brolce all previous records. With this expansion came an enlarged faculty and spirit of accomplishment. a Iudson School shall continue to work to expand its facilities and to improve its teaching in all areas. We are aware that we must offer to youth the best in educational opportunity, for the youth will become the support and substance of the nation. Former students throughout the 50 states and the many foreign countries can be proud to lcnow that their school still is in the front ranlcs producing well- rounded, Well-educated citizens. J -13- gh nd DAVID WICK, H eadmaxter WESLEY JOHNSON, Bminery Manager WILLIAM O. WICK, Campur Supewiiion The Judson A FINE SCHOOL is a collection of many departments and many services. In some respects each is autonomous, yet they must work together to accomp- lish the overall objective. To tie this organization together and make it func- tion as a unit, and at the same time to look ahead and plan for the future, is the task of the Judson administrators. The School's operation is as complex as a large industry. Administrators FUNCTIONING IN THE INTEREST of those it serves and financed by private funds, the School must seek efficiency, yet must never lose sight of its purpose in education. It must be flexible to meet immediate problems, yet keep focused on long-range values. Each administrator has his special re- sponsibilities and his special talents. Combining these under the leadership of the Director and the Headmaster, pol- icies are formulated and carried out. EDWARD A. NOCK, Arximmt Headmatter OTTO R. We came here to be educatedg they have helped us. They have always been here when a question has arisen, and answered that question. Hartom Athletic Director Ou: Athletic Director Speaks WE HAVE HAD a wonderful year in sports, produc- ing a champion football team, an all-winning basketball team, and fine efforts in roping, girls interscholastic competition, and the spring sports. For the first time in school history, one of our ath- letes has gained first team All-State recognition, and other accolades have come from the Scottsdale Quarter- back Club. Tribute to all our athletes was paid by Frank Kush, head football coach of Arizona State University, at the annual Sports Awards Dinner. Intramural competition increased in numbers and in fervor this year. Although the school colors were not carried into these games, the games were fiercely contested to determine which dormitory could pro- duce a champion team. Judson is one of eight schools that proposes to create a new athletic conference. The proposed conference would compete in the major sports during the 1964-1965 school year, and in all sports by the 1965- 1966 school year. Next year instruction in health will commence and a program of remedial physical education will be instituted. The program will be designed for students with respiratory ailments that cannot have bodily contact but can benefit from physical exercise. This has been a fine year for sports and all of us in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics look forward to an equally great next year. -138- Raul Disarufino jon Greear Chuck Hawkins Baxketball, Football Golf, lnimmumlx Track Wreftling C 11' Sl ff Rex Kleinman Judy Moore Delbert Powell Bafeball Girls' Atlaleticx Roping -139- - ------- -- - 1 -, ,,,,-wr, , W, W V-1 ---.1--xg-w--f.--. . S'ca'ce Foo'cl:a.11 Champions A FOOTBALL may bounce crazy ways, but it consistently bounced the right way for the 1963 Cougars. Knifing through the toughest 8-game schedule in the school's history, the foot- ballers compiled a 7 won, 1 tie season and were installed State Class B Independent Champions. A fine bevy of backs crossed opponents' goals for 185 points in a tremendous display of offensive power. Yet, it was jud- son's stout defense that keynoted the entire season. The defense was so stingy that opponents could score only a total 38 points, and four opponents were not permitted to score at all. -140- J udson 21 35 14 12 26 24 32 21 Ganado Bourgade Orme Ranch Paradise Valley Maricopa Duncan St. john's Seaton Charler Baldwin Garry Baldwin Tim Brown Fred Doyle Richard Cohn n',v if , . ,J5':afi'5+ 3 in if' ' . 4- , m !f'fzfJ'frrr.,':,31- 'L lu COUGARS WIN OPENER, 21-6 The Cougars opened the 1963 football season with a convincing win over the Ganado Mission Panthers. Quarterback Mike Reagan threw touchdown tosses to Rex Wilmans and Don Miller and Bob Gur- ley scooted over from 20 yards out to account for Judson's tallies. Ganado was not able to move inside the Cougar 30-yard line during the first half and scored its lone t.d. in the third quarter. BOURGADE FALLS, 55-O Impressive yardage was rolled up as the Cougars slipped past the Blue Angels. Rex Wilmans was kept busy crossing the Bour- gade goal line on runs of 40, 35, and 20 yards. Bob Gurley scored from 40 yards out and Richie Moe snatched a 30-yard aerial from Mike Reagan to com- plete the scoring. The Blue Angels never penetrated deeper than the Cougar's 35-yard line and judson's fine line crashed through repeatedly to throw Bourgade backs for losses. Orme started strong and at halftime Judson left the field trailing 7-O. But after intermission the Cou- gars surged ahead on runs of 40 yards by Larry Jack- son and 35 yards by Dave Hornsby. With only two minutes remaining in the game Orme struck through the air for a t.d. The all-impor- tant extra point was blocked when Judson's All-State guard, Barry Weiss, crashed through the line. The defeat for Orme was it's first in more than 5 years. PAR:XDlSlf V.'Xl.I.lfY HELD TO l2-lf Tlli The Blue and White went outside its league to take on the Class A Trojans of neighboring Paradise Valley. Senior quarterback Mike Reagan engineered a 70-yard sustained drive and scored from 8 yards out to catapult Judson into the lead. Dave Hornsby added 6 more points when he cracked over left guard for 50 yards. Paradise Valley returned after intermission and crashed over for two quick t.d.'s in the bitterly fought contest. On both attempts at the conversions, All- State guard Barry Weiss burst through the Trojan line to block the p.a.t. and preserve the tie with the bigger school. Pete Hanrcbildt Dave Hornsby Steve Irving Larry jackson -14 l 2.. MARICOPA BEATEN, 26.0 A game but outmanned team of Maricopa Rams became the next victim of the Judson juggernaut. Scoring in every quarter, the Cougars racked up a com- fortable lead and then substituted freely in the last two quarters. The fine Cougar line completely contained the Maricopa offense and opened the way to the goal line for Richie Moe, Dave Hornsby, Rex Wilmans and Fred Doyle. The Cougars struck quickly in the first period when senior quarterback Mike Reagan tossed to Don Kirk for 20 yards on a tackle-eligible play. Another lineman scored judson's next six points when guard Mike Einbender picked off a Duncan fumble and ram- bled 15 yards for the score. Fullback Dave Hornsby punched over from the 2 in the third period to cap a 70-yard sustained drive and a few minutes later quarterback Reagan went 40 yards up the middle to cap the scoring. . In an awesome dis- play of power, the Cougars sent their fine backs again and again across the Indians' goal line. St. johnls was kept bottled up constantly deep in its own territory by the fierce defense of the Cougar line, and twice Indian backs were caught in their own end zone. The homestanding footballers scored the first time they got their hands on the ball and added points in every quarter. SETON STONED, 21-7 Seton brought its undefeated, highly regarded Sen- tinels to Judsonland for the season finale and the showdown battle for the Class B Independent cham- pionship. Judson was not to be denied and came away from the game with a victory, its first win over Seton in three tries, and a state title. The Cougars started fast with two quick rallies in the first quarter, added another in the second frame, and led Zl-O at halftime. With four minutes remaining in the game, Seton tossed into the end zone and converted for its only score. Frank Kush stressed the sense of fair play and character developed through competitive sports and pointed out that self- discipline is one of the inherent factors of athletics. Mountain Deeefc Conference ON MAY 2 representatives of eight schools gathered at Judson to lay the founda- tion for a new athletic conference and to work out plans during the summer for schedules of competition. The proposed conference members would compete in the major sports during the 1964-1965 school year and in all sports by the 1965-1966 school year. Besides Judson, members of the conference would in- clude Bourgade, East Fork, Gerard, Orme Ranch, Phoenix Country Day, Seton, and Verde Valley. -163- X ar . V, SM. ,,,.. , . .164 ww. 1 ,V kg. Now that the last deadline has descended dpon us nd our work is at an I, 7211 A799 ,g f I , 'Q F oJf' O if Wwfw .iii ?f4'tll l end, I am able to look back and fully realize just what we have accomplished. A yearbook is a product which is produced with the help of many people, it cannot be done alone. First and foremost, I would like to thank our advisor, Mr. Dobbs, who has given your CACTUS his almost undivided attention. No matter how drastic the occurrences or calamities he would always be there to help. Without him I doubt that we could have produced this yearbook. Mr. Meathers, our photographer who delivered the pictures needed and worked under the many deadlines, deserves more than our thanks. Linda and Cheryl, I thank you both for the tremendous effort that you have devoted to the cause. Ken, Scooter, and Bob, all of your accomplishments are very much appreciated. I hope that in the years to come your CACTUS will be a possession that will forever bring back part of the memories of this year. i3afJw, 'N ZW M , Y ,W wW?W?55Q'WW L qygf' N wwifi H 1 WWW W WWC? fyffw fwqfjffyffjywf 1 MW q,25bWjJQwWM M64 WMM, ff C' we x .
