Commander Destroyer Captain john 1. Herzog U.S. Navy A quadron 1 i I I John James HERZOG was born 9 August 1921 in North Platte, Nebraska, son of John A. Cdeceasedb and Thersa Mendenhall HERZOG. Following graduation from High School, he enlisted in the Navy in January 1940. He served in the USS BROOKLYN fCL40J as a Fire Controlman 3fc prior to entering the Naval Academy in July 1942. Graduated with the class of 1946 in June 1945 and commissioned Ensign, he subsequently advanced in rank to grade of Captain, to date from 1 November 1966. After receiving his commission in June 1945, he served in the USS MACON CCA325, then at the Naval Pre- paratory School, Bainbridge, prior to attending Submarine School at New London, Connecticut, in 1947. During the twelve years following Submarine School, he served in the USS SEGUNDO fSS398J and the USS REMORA fSS467l in the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and USS CUBERA 4SS347l, which he commanded from 1957-1959, in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He also served in the USS PAUL REVERE fAPA248J and USS OKLAHOMA CITY CCLG5J as Executive Officer. He com- manded USS HIGBEE 4DD806J from 1963-1965. His shore duty assignments have been as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he also coached the lightweight crew, the office of the Chief of Naval Operations 4 .:...........',,, 4-. ...mn L -4,'.'.-......--q.-........s,...-sva.ua..a...q............. Q-....--- H-w-w in the Personnel Plans Division, and as U.S. Naval Attache, Moscow, USSR. For exceptionally meritorious service as U.S. Naval Attache, Moscow, Captain HERZOG was awarded the Le- tion of Merit. While Commanding Officer, USS HIGBEE, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for duty per- formed as the first Commander of CTG 71.1, the Market Time Coastal Surveillance Task Group off the Coast of South Vietnam. For duty as Executive Officer, USS OKLA- HOMA CITY, he was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a sec- ond Navy Commendation Medal. ln addition, Captain HERZOG has the American Defense Service Medal with A , American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. Captain HERZOG is married to the former Eugenia ESSEN of Wilkinsbury, Pennsylvania. They have two Chil- dren, Stephen, a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Gail, a student at the University of California, Irvine. -. .. ff ,.,.-.
